Zendaya takes on her first serious, gritty role as teenage drug addict in new Euphoria trailer

Like many former Disney stars, Zendaya Coleman is eager to transition into more serious roles and she plays a lying, drug-addicted 17-year-old called Rue in HBO's Euphoria premiering June 16.

The gritty 10-episode drama is based on HOT3's 2012-2013 Israeli series of the same name and it was helmed by Sam Levinson (Assassination Nation) and executive produced by Drake.

As Rue, the Oakland-born 22-year-old strips herself of glamour to play an androgynous character who just completed a stint in rehab.

'Every time I feel good, I think it will last forever, but it doesn't,' Zendaya said in voiceover in the preview.

'I promise you, if I could be a different person, I would. Not because I want it, but because they do.'

By contrast, the homeschooled triple-threat has an unblemished reputation for being squeaky clean and successful since her Disney Channel days.

'Obviously, there's not much in my own experience of being a teen that I could draw on, especially when it comes to struggling with addiction,' Coleman told Vogue this month.

Once back in high school, Rue discovers a kindred spirit in Jules portrayed by transgender actress and 20-year-old Elite Model, Hunter Schafer.

'Suddenly, the whole world goes dark, and nothing else matters but the person standing in front of you,' the character said.

The trailer dropped five days after Zendaya's Cinderella-inspired appearance at the 71st Annual Met Gala where she donned a high-tech, fiber optic Tommy Hilfiger gown and glass slippers.

It didn't take long for Lindsay Lohan to point out the similarity between Coleman's dress and the blue fiber optic Zac Posen gown Claire Danes donned at the 2016 Met Gala.
