The Walking Dead: Midseason finale ends with major shocker involving original cast member of AMC series
[SPOILER ALERT: The following has key details from the midseason finale of The Walking Dead.]
Rick Grimes' son Carl revealed being bitten by a walker on Sunday's episode in a shocking end to the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead.
The 90-minute special saw a terrifying turnaround for the survivors as they went from confident of defeating the Saviors — to once again being under attack.
In nail-biting scenes, evil Saviors' leader Negan returned to Alexandria where he threatened a mass slaughter in revenge for the plot on his Sanctuary.
Mid-season finale: Carl Grimes revealed being bitten by a walker at the end of the mid-season finale on Sunday of AMC's The Walking Dead
At the same time, his cohorts also overcame and threatened the other teams of good guys from both the Hilltop and the Kingdom.
Negan had threatened the kind of mass slaughter he has previously undertaken, saying through a microphone as he arrived outside the gates of Alexandria: 'Let's just cut through the cow s**t. You lose. It's over.'
He then threatened to kill the person with the 'lamest' apology before 'I kill Rick in front of everybody and we move on.'
Carl had stunned everyone by appearing to offer himself as a sacrifice to stop Negan and his men, standing at the top of the gate and telling him: 'If you have to kill someone, if there has to be punishment, then kill me. I'm serious.'
When Negan asked if he wanted to die, Carl told him: 'No, I don't. But I will. It's gonna happen.
In charge: Carl bargained with Negan and offered himself as a sacrifice
'If me dying could stop this — if it could make things different for all of us, for you, for all of those other kids — it'd be worth it.'
He then appeared to rattle Negan as he asked him: 'Was this the plan? Was it supposed to be this way? Is this who you wanted to be?'
But as he spoke, another group used the distraction to break out of the compound in garbage trucks, with Dwight, the Saviors traitor helping them, making sure they could get away.
Good question: Negan asked Carl if he wanted to die
'Son of a bitch Carl!' Negan screamed, as the youngster escaped from the gate at the same time.
'Was that just a play? I thought we were having a moment you little a**hole.'
In fact, the escape plot had all been Carl's plan, getting the team out to hopefully ambush Negan and his men later.
Father and son: The midseason finale featured flashbacks of Carl and his father Rick discussing the future
'All we need is to survive tonight,' Carl had told his dad's girlfriend Michonne when she questioned his plot.
'This is my show — you said, it. This is my plan and you're gonna do it.'
Carl had earlier been shown in a series of flashbacks with his dad, shown telling him at one point: 'Why are we doing this? Are we going to just kill all of them?
Survival plan: Carl asked Rick why they were going to war with the Saviors
Note behind: A note addressed to Dad was written out by Carl
'Finding some way forward — that's harder. That's something more. Dad, that's how it's gotta be.'
After Negan realized Carl had tricked him, his men firebombed Alexandria from beyond the gates, finally storming their way in as Carl ran off, using smoke to hide himself.
Limping from a fall, he seemed dizzy and blurred, with viewers assuming at first it was because of a series of close escapes as he ran.
Safe zone: The Alexandria Safe-Zone was firebombed by Negan's crew from beyond the gate
At the same time, his dad Rick finally arrived back at Alexandria, going straight to their house expecting to find Carl and Michonne waiting for him.
Instead, he was met by a blow from Negan's trusted baseball bat Lucille, with Negan chuckling as he told him: 'This s*** isn't funny anymore.'
As he continued to beat him, Negan told Rick: 'Don't make me do this now, Rick. I got plans for you. Cut you up into itty bitty pieces and feed to the Dead and make you watch. Then, when you're some kind of creepy stump with a head, that's when I'm gonna kill ya, in front of everybody.'
Getting away: Carl was rocked by explosions as he made his retreat
As they continued tussling, Negan told Rick: 'You know your kid volunteered to die? What kind of boy you raise, Rick?'
He then told him: 'I like him. Few years he's gonna be one of my top guys.'
As Rick tried fighting back, Negan once again threatened a dramatic death for him, warning: 'When I am done with you nobody will ever try to do what you did, not ever again. Not your friends, not your son.'
Running home: Rick ran back to his house expecting to find Carl and Michonne
But Rick managed to grab a bell and knock Negan off his feet, also using the end of his baseball bat on him in a fight that eventually saw him fall through a window with a gun in his hand, a shot heard going off.
'S***,' Negan said as Rick ran off from him.
Michonne was also looking for Rick — and repeatedly hacked up a member of the saviors who had told her they were all dead, before Rick found her.
Sword master: Michonne used her sword masterfully to kill a Savior who told her everyone was dead
They then went together to underground passageways where the survivors were huddled safely, making their way through until they finally found Carl leaning up against a far wall.
Shivering and pale, Carl told them he 'saw what happened' — then slowly lifted up a bandage on his stomach to reveal a large bite mark.
Michonne fell to her knees sobbing, while Rick stared in disbelief with watery eyes, the camera slowly panning back as he hugged his son who would soon be turning into a walker.

At the Kingdom, King Ezekiel had started a fire to help his people escape — but then shut himself inside with the Saviors, seemingly sacrificing himself to them.
Maggie arrived just as he closed the gates, with him telling her: 'Save them like you saved me.'
Maggie Greene, meanwhile, also been ambushed as she traveled with Paul 'Jesus' Rovia, with Negan's right-hand man Simon smiling as he said: 'Hello, hello, hello — what a damned nice night.'

He threatened to throw her in the same coffin Sasha had previously been in, telling her: 'Then we take you to Hilltop, then kill you in front of the whole place. And then drag you back to Sanctuary and put you on a spike in front of HQ.'
To prove he meant business he then shot her friend in the passenger seat behind her in the car, telling her: 'I really needed you to know what I was talking about. I need you to smell it.'
He then threatened to shoot dead Jesus beside her — with her finally begging him to stop and agreeing to go back to the Hilltop to work for them as ordered.
Convoy ambush: Maggie was in the convoy that was ambushed by the Saviors
But once there, she pulled out one of the Saviors they had — and shot him in the head.
'Saviors killed one of our own tonight on the road. We aren't even, but that was a start,' she said, sounding defiant but walking off crying, before writing a warning sign saying: 'We have 38 more. Stand down.'
Aaron and Enid, meanwhile, had a disastrous result as they tried to travel to Oceanside to get them to help.
Not even: The Hilltop leader executed a prisoner after the Saviors killed one of her people
Sleeping aid: Eugene gave Gabriel and Doctor Carson safe passage to escape so he could sleep at night
Savior traitor: Dwight was wounded while betraying the Saviors and joined up with Rick's group
Aaron had warned Enid that Oceanside members were known to 'kill on sight' when strangers arrived.
He told her: 'It's going to be a risk, but we need them on our side. We have to convince them.'
They were then ambushed as they made a rest stop in a field — only realizing too late that in the chaos Enid had shot the group's leader, Natania.
Risky mission: Enid and Aaron went on a risky mission to recruit the Oceanside community
