Game Of Thrones viewers are left disappointed after Daenerys Targaryen proves 'Mad Queen' theory during dramatic penultimate episode

  • WARNING: This article contains season 8, episode 5 spoilers throughout

If the battle of Winterfell disappointed by failing to provide an adequate death list, one might assume the relentless bloodshed that underpinned Sunday evening’s episode of Game of Thrones might appease its increasingly hard to please fan-base.

But despite the demise of several key players, viewers were once again left to express their frustration, confusion and anger over what many regarded as an underwhelming penultimate instalment in the long-running fantasy drama.

Fans stayed up late to watch Daenerys Targaryen burn Kings Landing to the ground - incinerating thousands of innocent men, women and children in the process – despite the citadel yielding to the Mother of Dragons and her army of Unsullied and Dothraki warriors.

However many argued that her merciless brutality was at odds with almost nine-years of careful character development and meticulous storytelling, with Daenerys having previously shown mercy to her captives.

Taking to Twitter, one disappointed viewer wrote: 'The writers of #gameofthrones making Daenerys go mad Queen was so confusing to watch.'

Others expressed disappointment that the writers had chosen to push her character closer to that of her late father, the unpredictable King Aerys II Targaryen - commonly referred to as the 'Mad King' - a theory previously discussed by fans of the hit show.

Pointing the finger of blame at show-runners David Benioff and D.B Weiss, anoher added: 'the fact that the past 7 seasons did everything to avoid making daenerys the mad queen but once D&D freely wrote she suddenly lost all character development and went crazy.'

While another fumed: 'So Daenerys became the mad queen over one episode?? The opposite of everything she stood for since the beginning. From the writing to the rushed character arcs this entire season is a mess. The characters and fans deserve so much better.'

'So we spent 8 season with Daenerys, “Mother of Dragons, Breaker of Chains, Protector of the 7 Kingdoms” blah blah blah just to see her turn #madqueen in 82 minutes?? Predictable,' wrote a fourth.

Evidently in agreement, another added: 'The writers being predictable and turning Daenerys into “The Mad Queen."'

'turning daenerys the mad queen because everyone betrayed her, making her look like a fool and weak, killing her dragons... in this essay i will explain why men can't write female characters,' added one more disgruntled fan.

A series of key characters met their bloody end as Kings Landing burned on Sunday evening, with Lord Varys, Sandor Clegane, Euron Greyjoy and Cersei and Jamie Lannister all bowing out ahead of the show's final episode.

Game Of Thrones concludes on May 19.
