  • Over 3,500 kids have been named after the character since the show began

Khaleesi might have become a popular name to call girls, but the Game of Thrones heroine's dark turn in the latest episode has left many parents wondering whether they made a wise choice.

The latest episode of the eighth season titled The Bells, which aired on Sunday night in the US, saw Daenerys Targaryen - titled 'Khaleesi' or queen - order her dragons to incinerate the town of Kings Landing, along with thousands of innocent men, women and children.

That was after trying to snog her nephew Jon Snow.

Jasmine Estrada, one of thousands of parents in the past few years to name their child after the 'dragon queen', exclaimed to website The Daily Beast: 'Oh my god, she lost her marbles.'

'I'm kind of in shock,' Ms Estrada said after the show was over. 'It was kind of disappointing that her power trip took over. That was not cool.'

The Miami mum said she didn't regret giving her six-year-old the 'cool and powerful' name.

But 'I definitely don't like the outcome of what she represents,' she said. 'So it's kind of bittersweet right now.'

In the US last year, 560 girls were named Khaleesi. The total number christened Khaleesi, Daenerys or other variations of her name since the series began is over 3,500.

Until the latest episode, the mother of dragons and freer of slaves had been one of the most popular characters in the fictional land of Westeros.

Some viewers wondered if Game of Thrones series writers David Benioff and D.B Weiss had been at 'The Bells'.

Fans have rated the episode the worst ever in the hit series history.

'The writers of #gameofthrones making Daenerys go mad Queen was so confusing to watch,' one tweeted.

Another wrote: 'the fact that the past 7 seasons did everything to avoid making daenerys the mad queen but once D&D freely wrote she suddenly lost all character development and went crazy.'

Game of Thrones fans took to social media to ridicule parents who named their kids after heroine-turned villain Daenerys Targaryen after Sunday's episode

But another mum, who named her daughter Khaleesi after her difficult pregnancy, condoned the ash-blond queen's actions.

'I'm still standing beside her,' said Katherine Acosta. 'I think she did what she had to do.'

While she still loves the name, Katherine wondered if her daughter would be horrified by her namesake when she was old enough to watch the series.

'She could say, 'Wow, she was a bad b, she did what she had to do,' she said.

'That's how I see it, and hopefully she sees it the same way, 'cuz she's just as bad.'

GoT mum Channy, whose daughter Khaleesi is 11 months old, told Buzzfeed the episode 'intense' but not upsetting, adding: 'She's going for what she wants.'

Nikki Sotto, mother of Khaleesi Lila, told Buzzfeed she was 'yelling at the TV the whole time,' but justified the genocidal inferno afterwards.

'What girl hasn't overreacted when they see their whole world crumbling around them?' she said.

'I feel for her. I'm just bummed Jon [Snow] and her have to be related. I wanted them to live happily ever after.'

And mother Shay told Buzzfeed that she wanted her Daughter to grow up like the dragon queen.

'The name is unique and I also wanted her to be like Khaleesi,' she said.

'Strong woman and rock her world and everyone obeying her.'
