A stunning night of Champions League action saw Liverpool overcome a 3-0 deficit to beat Barcelona on an evening filled with record-breakers, motivational messages and Reds legends old and new.

After Divock Origi's opener, Georginio Wijnaldum struck twice in two stunning second-half minutes to level a tie that had seemed out of reach before Origi hit an unbelievable winner.

He may have been ruled out of the tie through injury, but Liverpool's talisman Mohamed Salah had a special message for his team-mates before the game.

The Egyptian winger wore a t-shirt declaring 'Never Give Up' as his side attempted to overturn a daunting 3-0 deficit at Anfield. 

It appeared somewhat effective, as the hosts conjured up a marvellous display to draw level on aggregate. 

LIVERPOOL LEGENDS 

If Liverpool's players needed any bigger inspiration before the game, the presence of two of the club's most legendary figures may have helped.

Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish were both in attendance at Anfield, and spent time in the build up with fans.

Gerrard shared a post of them both, captioned in reference to Dalglish: 'The King is in the house'.

 THAT AGED WELL...

When Divock Origi's close-range finish handed Liverpool the early goal they needed to move the game to 3-1 on aggregate, Barcelona's official Twitter account didn't seem overly fussed.

Jokingly, they asserted: 'We score, Liverpool need FIVE - and we're going to get at least one... agreed?'

Unfortunately, that one never came - but another three for Liverpool did. 

WONDER WIJNALDUM

Having struggled in an unfamiliar role up front during the first leg, Georginio Wijnaldum was relegated to the bench by Jurgen Klopp for the decisive second leg.

 However, his chance came in the second half as Andrew Robertson was withdrawn at half-time through injury.

And take it he did, becoming the first substitute to score two goals in a single Champions League semi-final game in history and proving his point in fine fashion.

 LIVERPOOL BEAT THE ODDS IN STYLE

 Liverpool's stunning display helped overturn mammoth odds, with Betfair offering 120-1 on Betfair Exchange on a 4-0 home win before kick-off.

That would have resulted in a healthy pay-day for any punters brave enough to bet on it, with Barcelona odds-on to go through and Liverpool at 25-1 to make the final.

RETURN GOES SOUR FOR SUAREZ

What appeared to be a comfortable homecoming for Luis Suarez rapidly turned sour for the Uruguayan hitman. 

Having earned hero status during three-and-a-half goal-laden seasons at Anfield, Suarez found himself in trouble throughout as his team floundered.

Having been jeered and catcalled by the broiling crowd, Suarez then appeared to kick out at Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson, who was later taken off injured.

It capped off a miserable night for the striker, who failed to pose any threat to his former club.
