Bodycam footage has captured the moment a 12-year-old girl was arrested after allegedly taking her grandfather's car on a drunken joy ride with her three friends and leading police on a highway pursuit. 

The girl was charged with underage drinking, a DUI and leading police on a chase following her arrest in Alamogordo, New Mexico last week.

Police said officers were on an unrelated call searching for a wanted person when they spotted a car leaving a closed business area. 

The car sped off when an officer tried to identify the owner.

Authorities said the girl then led police on a pursuit along U.S. Highway 70 until she crashed into a street sign and almost collided with two police cruisers. 

Bodycam video obtained by KRQE showed officers surrounding the vehicle and yelling for the driver and passengers to get out of the car before one officer cracked his baton against the window. 

Police were stunned when the 12-year-old girl eventually emerged from the car with her hands up. 

The video also showed her three friends, aged 12 and 13, lying on the road as police surrounded them. 

The girl allegedly told police she had waited for her grandfather to fall asleep before taking his car.

Police said the girl admitted to picking up her friends so they could go drinking. 

A bottle of Smirnoff and hard iced teas were found in the car by police. 

Police said all four children told authorities that they had been drinking. 

The girl's father later told police at the station that he didn't know where they got the alcohol from because they didn't keep liquor in their home. 

'If you've got to keep her in jail tonight, if you think it's right, do it,' the father told police. 

All four girl were charged with underage drinking. 

The driver was also hit with the additional DUI and police chase charges.
