Khaled shared his thoughts about why he decided to release the single in a tribute to Hussle on Twitter.

'Recently, I embarked on a soul-searching journey down a road I never thought I would travel in a million years. It began when a tragedy robbed the world of an enlightened soul, a brother, a father, a partner and my friend, Nipsey Hussle.'

Khaled said that just days before Hussle's death, 'he shared his energy and positivity with me on a video set for a song called "Higher."

'We filmed in Inglewood, close to where he grew up. He was so gifted, so proud of his home, so invested in his community. Utterly stunned that he's gone so soon,' Legend said.

The death of Hussle, 33, sent a shock wave through the hip hop community and beyond.

Fans poured out adoration for a man whose career hit new heights with 'Victory Lap,' his first studio album that earned a Grammy nomination after he released much sought-after mixtapes for a decade.

He was a beloved figure for his philanthropic work that went well beyond the usual celebrity 'giving back' ethos.

Coincidentally, Staples Center was the same setting as the Crenshaw community leader's April 11 Celebration of Life memorial service where Lauren delivered a touching eulogy.

'My pain is from a 2-year-old that probably won't remember how much his dad loved him,' London said of their son Kross during Hussle's eulogy.

'This is something that I don't really understand but I know Ermias always used to say that you can't possess people; that you experience them. I'm so honored and blessed to experience such a man.'

London recently shared a photo of Hussle on Instagram with the caption: 'King of Los Angeles. Then. Now . Forever.'

Eric Holder, 29, was arrested shortly after Hussle's death and has been accused of fatally shooting the rapper.

Authorities say Holder and Hussle, who knew each other, had several conversations on March 31 outside the rapper's clothing store.

They say Holder eventually returned with a handgun and shot Hussle, who was declared dead at a hospital. He also wounded two other men.

If convicted, Holder faces life in prison

Hussle had gone to his store to help an ex-con friend by giving him new clothes and had not told his security about his plans, according to sources close to him.

The brutal killing was caught on surveillance camera footage which helped police identify Holder.

A judge set Holder's bail at $5million at the request of the District Attorney.

Holder pleaded not guilty in connection to the shooting death.
