Ryan has taken a reprieve from the spotlight in recent years; her last role in a feature film was in the 2015 drama Ithaca, which she also directed.
The Sleepless in Seattle star announced her engagement to Mellencamp via Instagram on November 8.
The pair first started dating in 2011, before breaking up in 2014, getting back together later that year, ending things again in 2015, and reconciling for a final time in 2017.
This will be the second marriage for Ryan, who was wed to actor Dennis Quaid for 10 years; it's the fourth for the rocker, who has five kids from his previous marriages.
