A man has been arrested after police said that he faked his own kidnapping in a bid to garner sympathy from his ex-girlfriend.

Darrius Steve Roberts was arrested on Thursday in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and charged with obstructing justice and filing a false report of a crime.

Police say that Roberts disappeared early on Thursday, and his family began receiving shocking and violent threats from the 'kidnapper' via Facebook and text messages.

The 'kidnappers' posted their threats on Roberts' own Facebook page, alleging that they had him captive and had control of his account.

'Let's the game began we would f**k him up right now but we want him to feel all this pain,' the supposed kidnappers wrote.

The alleged criminal masterminds boasted that they would outsmart investigators, writing: 'when the police do a search on that Facebook profile it's going to all lead back to darrius we know people that know how to do things like this let's see how long it takes the pigs to find us see here is the best part we not in Tulsa.'

'I can do this all night the meth and the coke keeps us up all night only reason we texting is we want to see y'all beg us not to blow his f**king brains all over this wall,' the supposed kidnappers wrote at 2.56am.

'Y'all thought we was stupid told u dumb b***hes they not going to find us,' another post at 9.05am read.

By 10am police had received hundreds of tips from concerned friends and family members that Roberts was in grave danger.

The Tulsa Police Department quickly organized a massive task force, including members of the Special Investigations Division, Homicide Detectives, and the Fugitive Warrants Unit.

A command post was set up to organize a citywide search for Roberts, and police say less urgent calls for service were put on hold in order to dedicate patrol officers to the search.

Working swiftly, investigators followed several leads that led them to locate Roberts by about 11.30am.

As cops approached the home where they believed Roberts was, he was seen jumping out of a rear window and fleeing, according to police.

He was stopped by officers in possession of his charged cell phone and transported for interview.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit reported by the Tulsa World, people at the residence where he was found told police 'they helped Roberts tie himself up and take photos, stating he wanted sympathy from a former girlfriend.'

Roberts was booked on obstruction and false report charges at 1.56pm, jail records show.

He remains in custody at the Tulsa County Jail pending a $1,000 bond and is due in court on Wednesday.

It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney to speak on his behalf.

Following his arrest, Roberts' mother posted an apology on Facebook, and thanked the community for the outpouring of support when it appeared her son had been kidnapped.

'Thank you for your concern and your prayers blessings to you and your family,' wrote mother Michelle Roberts Boisseau.

'People who I haven't seen or heard from for months called me my my. We are going to seek help for him. This was embarrassing but God!!!'
