She spent days teasing fans about a new era.

Well Halsey has delivered: with the arrival of 'Nightmare', the first single off of her forthcoming new studio album.

The hard-hitting tune, and its accompanied video, is a rock-infused anthem full of youth angst and rebellion.

The song begins gently with Halsey reciting the classic bedtime prayer, Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.

But once the band kicks in, the tune goes full-throttle into the hooky chorus chant.

'I keep a record of the wreckage in my life - I gotta recognize the weapon in my mind - They talk s*** but I love it every time - and I realize... '

Blast from the past: Initially there's shots of Haley dressed like a 1950s pinup girl in an animal print short jumpsuit with dyed bright red hair

Getting down! The colorful visuals are transitioned into black-and-white pictures of city streets, and shots of the singer belting out her vocals in the midst of a raucous party

Brutal: Verse one drops dynamically but the song keeps up the audio and visual assault with the line: 'I've tasted blood and it is sweet' along to a close up of Halsey with a bloodied mouth.

She's introspective and provocative with lines like: 'I'm no sweet dream but I'm a hell of a night'; she even touches on the body image debate with the line: 'I've pinched my skin in between my two fingers - And wished I could cut some parts off with some scissors.'

The empowering anthem of independence also features some gender-bending alongside actress-model Cara Delevingne.

Last week, Halsey (born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane) started a nationwide scavenger hunt, urging fans to search out for lyrics to her new song Nightmare.

'Los Angeles - Dallas - Chicago - Bay Area - New York City. I hid lyrics to NIGHTMARE in your cities. Let me know when you find them,' the songstress wrote.

Her followers responded with pictures of their findings as well as pleads for more hints.

In the photos the words 'save your prayers,' can be seen, as well as a definition of nightmare disorder with a number of sentences blacked out.

'Nightmare disorder is a form of paralyze, a condition characterized by a sense of extremem disomfort or frightful streams when sleeping and (redacted).
