Tiger Woods has missed the cut at the US PGA - his first tournament since he sensationally claimed victory at the Masters six weeks ago.

The golfing legend, 43, crashed out of the competition at Bethpage Black in upstate New York on Friday after a round of 73 left him at 5-over - one shot off the cut line.

He told reporters he hasn't been playing regularly since he won the Masters in Augusta on April 14, revealing that he's been suffering from an illness.

While he didn't provide details of the ailment, Woods said he was 'just not able' to get on the course, and had instead been resting.

However, the sportsman was still in high spirits in spite of missing the cut, telling AP: 'I'm the Masters champion and 43 years old and that's a pretty good accomplishment.'

He added: 'I've enjoyed being the Masters champion again, and the PGA was a quick turnaround, and unfortunately I just didn't play well.

'I didn't do all the little things I need to do correctly to post good scores and put myself in position to shoot good scores.'

Woods is now looking forward to the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in June.

The sporting legend revealed he's been suffering from an illness in the weeks since his Masters victory

'There's no reason why I can't get up to speed again and crank it back up,' he declared about his career on the course.

'I've got to start feeling a little bit better first before that happens. We'll do that first and then start cranking it back up again'.

While Woods says he's been resting and feeling under the weather in recent weeks, he did manage to make it to the White House May 6, where he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

He became the first ever active athlete to receive the accolade, with President Donald Trump  describing Woods as 'a global symbol of American excellence, devotion, and drive.'

Woods' incredible victory at the Masters back in April marked one of sports greatest comebacks.

It was his 15th major tournament victory, but his first since 2008 - before the scandals that rocked his personal life and almost destroyed his public image.

In 2009, more than a dozen women came forward alleging they had affairs with Woods, who was married to Swedish model Elin Nordegren at the time. The couple divorced in 2010.
