In a video obtained by The Sun, Stephen was seen beginning his speech by talking about his 'lifetime of being gay'.
He then went on to emotionally reflect on losing several of his friends to the harrowing epidemic in the year he graduated from university.
He said: 'Seeing them emaciated, ill, dying. Parents struggling to come to terms as their son told them that they were gay and going to die in the same sentence.
'It seemed that rainbow was further away than it had ever been and our lives would be forever banished from the world of love and connection.

'But with the help of some of those parents, the miraculous work of doctors, campaigners, and organisations... The extraordinary will of our community, the anger and outrage of our community, things began to change and the tide has turned.'
At that point a loud ringtone was heard blaring out from the crowd, with the phone owner remaining unidentified.
Without skipping a beat, the QI host looked up and said 'answer that or I’ll kill you!' prompting the audience to cheer and laugh.
