ITV star Holly Willoughby and her TV executive husband Dan Baldwin applied to fell a dead Sycamore tree in their garden over fears branches will fall on their children.

In the latest upgrade to their £2.8million west London home, the couple lodged application documents in order to remove the tree.

In documents submitted to their local council by Mr Baldwin, the couple briefly outlined their reasons for felling the tree.

'Fell due to the fact it is dead and starting to drop branches in garden with small children playing.'

They were granted permission on April 16 last year after submitting the application on April 5.

Pictures from the planning documents show the tree looking bare, with many of the branches hanging off.

Holly has three children, Harry, Belle, and Chester however she prefers to them away from the limelight but it is understood to absolutely adore family life.

She once said: 'We're very happy, lucky and blessed with what we have.'

Within 24 hours of the application being validated by the council, planners gave it the green light but ordered a new tree to be planted in the same place. In a decision notice, council planners, added: 'The replacement tree is to be a Sycamore; of a minimum size of 12-14cm in girth at the time of planting.

'The replacement planting should take place as close as is reasonably practicable to the location of the original specimen.

'The applicant is required to notify and obtain the agreement of the Local Planning Authority of the species and location of the replacement tree before planting.'

A source said: 'The tree involved in the application posed a safety risk as it was dead.

'Their kids love to play in the garden so the tree had to be felled to prevent any potential accidents from happening.'

It comes after the pair lodged plans to convert a garage at her property into a one bedroom flat to accommodate an au pair to look after her three children.

The plans are one of 14 planning applications Holly and her husband have made since buying their six bedroom family home for £2.8million in 2012 with the couple's biggest project being a basement which they were given permission to excavate and build.

Holly has become popular on TV thanks to her partnership with Philip Schofield. Last year she stood in for Ant McPartlin on 'I'm A Celebrity' after he dropped out to continue his recovery following a drink drive conviction.

Holly was a huge hit with viewers with many saying they preferred her on screen partnership with Declan Donnelly to that with his absent partner.

Planners are expected to make a decision on their latest plans next month
