Catch and release gone wrong! Diving cormorant snatches a small fish straight after angler throws it back into the water

  • Fisherman named George caught undersized fishes at Blairgowrie Pier, Victoria
  • Shortly after he threw them back in the ocean, a cormorant scooped one up
  • The cormorant begun hunting for the other fish but it managed to escape

A fisherman who threw his undersized catch back into the ocean had to watch in horror after a diving cormorant immediately swooped in.

The angler named George was filmed returning the two fish he caught at the Blairgowrie Pier in Victoria' south by sea-life enthusiast, Jules Casey.

Shortly after throwing the second fish back, the hungry sea bird launched into the water and ate one of the fish before it started hunting for the other.

Casey was broken-heartened by the poor little fish being eating by the opportunistic cormorant.

'The cormorant got it. Oh no,' said Casey.

'It ate it and it's going back for the second one.

'He knows there's two. You cheeky little bugger.'

Luckily the second small fish escaped the clutches of the cormorant and it swam to safety.

Commenters chimed in on the poor fish's demise at the hand of the cormorant.

One commenter morbidly said, 'No one can escape death.'

Another person was more sympathetic towards the little fish: 'Oh no. Everything feeds on something else in our oceans. This was so unlucky for those two fish after they had just been released back into the ocean.'

A third commenter was more philosophical: 'Life is life. The human did the right thing and so did the cormorant.'
