The local area guide to living in Hull
While commonly referred to as Hull, the city is more formally known as Kingston upon Hull. Sat in the East Riding area of Yorkshire, the city shares a name with its river, the River Hull, which sits 25 miles inland from the North Sea.
Hull was founded in the late 12th century and history has seen the city go through ups and downs. It was a theatre of battle in the English Civil Wars and experienced heavy damage in the Second World War, which led to a period of post-industrial decline. This had an impact on a number of things, including education and the social profile of the city. As a result, Hull tends to have a profile of being relatively run down, but things are certainly looking on the up. Many of the popular tourist attractions, such as the Old Town, Marina, and Museum Quarter, draw visitors to the city and have helped improve the local economy. What’s more, in 2017, Hull will be the UK City of Culture.
Information about the local residents
The population of Kingston upon Hull has shrunk over the years. In the latest Census data from 2011, a population of 235,406 was recorded. Of the population, approximately 55% of people were employed in either full time roles, part time roles, or through self-employment. The unemployment levels at this time were relatively high, sitting at 8%. What’s more, the average income here is low too, especially when compared to the rest of the UK.
The city’s population is made up of predominantly British people (approximately 90%). There is also a small minority of Iranian Kurds, amongst other ethnic groups, including Chinese, Black Caribbean, and Black African.
Nearby schools
There are a number of schools to be found across the city, including 11 primary schools and 14 secondary schools. Much like the rest of the prospects here, pupils’ attainment is low when compared to other cities. In fact, just 29.3% achieved five or more grades A*-C at GCSE level in 2008.
Despite the bleak picture, there have been improvements over the years and there are some decent schools in Hull. Good primary schools include St Andrew’s Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School and Adelaide Primary School. In their recent inspections, Ofsted rated both primary schools as ‘good’, including the ‘overall effectiveness of the school’. When it comes to secondary schools, Hymers College and Hull Collegiate School have both performed well.
Getting around
Hull is situated right next to Humber Bridge, allowing direct road access to the south. You can also travel to and from Hull via the M62 and A63, or the A1079 from York.
Public transport here is in abundance. The city has its own railway station, situated at the Hull Paragon Interchange, which combines the main bus and rail terminals in one central location. From here, you can catch an express train to London. Numerous bus routes run from here too and are predominantly run by Stagecoach in Hull.
For travel abroad, Robin Hood Airport sits approximately 50 miles away and Humberside Airport, even closer, at just 20 miles away. Both airports offer flights to Europe. Alternatively, you can catch a ferry from King George Dock to Zeebrugge or Rotterdam.
Local shops
Hull is perhaps one of the most popular shopping spots in the East Riding of Yorkshire area. The city boasts three shopping centres, brimming with your favourite retail stores, as well as a number of shopping streets, such as Whitefriargate.
Princes Quays Shopping Centre is one of the city favourites, sat above the water on stilts. It offers shops including River Island, Foot Locker, and Primark, plus a Vue cinema. If it's a more comprehensive shopping experience you’re after, you might prefer to head to St Stephen’s. Boasting stores and restaurants, including Prezzo and the Handmade Burger Co, it’s the perfect shopping spot for all the family. You’ll also find a huge 24-hr Tesco superstore sat next door, ideal for all your grocery needs.
