Alabama 3 co-founder and singer Jake Black has died.

The English country-acid house band are best known for their song Woke Up This Morning, which was used as the theme for HBO's legendary series The Sopranos.

The band broke the sad news on its official Facebook page on Tuesday.  

'Early this afternoon, on a beautiful summer's day, our friend, comrade and spiritual teacher, Jake Black AKA The Very Reverend D.Wayne Love, passed over to the higher ground,' the post began.

'After a magnificent performance at the Highpoint Festival in Lancashire, D.Wayne in his supreme wisdom, decided it was the appropriate moment for his ascencion into the next level.'

The band revealed that Black was surrounded by his 'brothers Larry Love, L.B. Dope, The Spirit, Jonny Jamm and Sister Therese Mullan.'

Also stating that they are 'heartbroken', the band then shared that they will now 'carry out his precise instructions regarding the continuation of his teachings as a First Minister of The Presleyterian Church of Elvis The Divine, and continue The Great Work.'

The post ended with Black's final words: 'Tweet Tweet, Possil Fleet', which the band has yet to decipher.

Alabama 3 were formed in the Brixton section of London, England in 1995 when Black met Rob Spragg, a.k.a Larry Love, at an acid house party.   

They teamed up with the idea that they wanted to create a sound that mixed country music with acid house as much as possible. 

Adding to their unique sound, they went on to incorporate touches of gospel, slide guitar and dance beats.

Starting with 1997's Exile On Coldharbour Lane, the band have released 12 studio albums.

The song - Woke Up This Morning  -  on the debut, ended up being used for The Sopranos theme two years later.   

Alabama 3's last release, Blues, came out in 2016.
