Tories brace for Euro election wipeout after day of calamity for Theresa May saw Andrea

Theresa May was expected to reveal details of her departure tomorrow after ministers savaged her concessions to Labour over Brexit - but former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith has insisted: ‘The sofa is up against the door, she’s not leaving.’ Andrea Leadsom piled pressure on the Prime Minister by announcing her own resignation from the Cabinet last night. In a parting blast, the Commons Leader said she could not stomach the latest version of Mrs May’s Brexit deal, with its offer of a second referendum. Other ministers are said to be ready to go too if the Prime Minister tries to cling to power after today’s European elections. The Tories are set to be decimated by Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party. It is understood that Sajid Javid, Jeremy Hunt and David Mundell will use ministerial meetings with Mrs May today to warn that they also consider the Withdrawal Agreement Bill unacceptable in its current form. Tory backbenchers were in uproar over Mrs May’s decision to seek Labour support in the hope of getting her deal through the House of Commons at the fourth attempt. At one stage yesterday, some aides believed she was on the verge of quitting on the spot – and even started preparations for a resignation statement. But chief whip Julian Smith later told the 1922 Committee of backbench MPs that Mrs May intended to campaign in today’s elections and would instead meet the group’s chairman Sir Graham Brady tomorrow to discuss its concerns. Mrs May refused to see rebel ministers yesterday afternoon, leading to accusations that she was bunkered down in No 10.

Labour and the Brexit Party were also adamant that the UK should have cut ties with the EU by now. But because of the Article 50 extension, the government has been forced to proceed.

Corporal Frankie O’Leary (top main), a former comrade of Prince Harry (pictured together below right) during his service of Afghanistan, is to be kicked out of the Army after testing positive to cocaine, defence sources have revealed to The Mail. The 32-year-old, of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment based at Hyde Park Barracks in London, was among four soldiers to fail drugs tests in the last few days and are in the process of being kicked out. A friend of the Cpl O’Leary’s told the Mail: ‘He knows he has made a huge mistake and it has cost him the job he loved. He just feels he has let down his family, friends and the regiment.’ O’Leary also took part in the Household Cavalry escort (below left ) for the carriage procession at Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle last year. He rode ahead of the carriage carrying the newlyweds around Windsor.

Royal observers have noticed that plasters are often a staple in the Duchess of Cambridge's wardrobe. Small ones were spotted on her thumb at the Chelsea Flower Show this week. How Meghan Markle reacted to Beyoncé and Jay Z's portrait tribute to her

Beyoncé, 37, and Jay Z, 49, stood in front of a portrait of Meghan, 37, wearing a crown during their video acceptance speech for the BRIT Awards in February (right). The Duchess of Sussex's makeup artist Daniel Martin opened up about the moment in the CBS News special Meghan and Harry Plus One. Daniel said when he sent her a photo, she texted him 'the big eye emoji.' The exact emoji that was sent remains unclear, but it was likely the flushed face emoji, which is a yellow face with wide eyes and blushing cheeks. The oil painting, which shows Meghan donning a crown and jewels, was created by Brooklyn-based artist Tim O'Brien. He originally made the oil painting for the Summer 2018 cover of her sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma's magazine The Key (inset).

HENRY DEEDES watches as a wounded Mrs May is humiliated by both sides of the House

HENRY DEEDES: Parliament recently introduced a bill to outlaw the use of wild animals in circuses. Parading defenceless creatures in front of an audience to be bayed and laughed at is cruel and demeaning. No place for it in today’s civilised society. But while MPs go all gooey over pandas, horses and bunny rabbits, they have decided the Prime Minister deserves no such clemency. At 6pm last night, it looked as though the Cabinet was about to tell her it was time to go. False alarm. She would be hunkering down in No 10 for at least one more night. Pictured: Theresa May giving a statement to a separate debate today, not the Brexit debate. (Inset) Theresa May speaking in Parliament.

STEPHEN GLOVER: Which party should sane people who plumped for Leave in 2016 support in today’s European elections? It is a question troubling millions of voters, me included.

ANDREW PIERCE: Andrea Leadsom’s resignation completed an extraordinary circle of loyalty and disloyalty in the House of Commons.

Her Withdrawal Agreement Bill is seemingly dead in the water, and as events in Downing Street yesterday so brutally demonstrated, her support and authority have evaporated.

Andrea Leadsom resigns in 'plot to replace Theresa May as Prime Minister'

Andrea Leadsom (pictured right and left, outside her London home on Tuesday) resigned in protest after the Prime Minister (pictured inset bottom) committed to giving MPs a vote on a possible second Brexit referendum. In her resignation letter, Mrs Leadsom wrote: 'I no longer believe that our approach will deliver on the referendum result.' (pictured inset top) Allies last night said she had warned Mrs May at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday that she could not accept her latest Brexit offer. After the PM went ahead regardless, the Commons leader yesterday telephoned Mrs May to tell her she was quitting before posting her resignation letter on social media. She is the 36th ministerial resignation since Mrs May became Prime Minister almost three years ago.

With a leadership race already underway even as she remains at her post it means the summer is likely to be spent choosing her replacement - who will then have to work out what to do about Brexit.

Rumours that Prime Minister Theresa May could be ousted caused sterling to slide yesterday against the euro for the 13th day in a row. The currency dropped 0.2 per cent to around €1.1354.

British Steel collapses, putting 25,000 jobs at risk

Furious workers (pictured main leaving Scunthorpe plant today) and their families slammed the government, saying ministers should hang their heads in shame, for not intervening to save British Steel as the manufacturer today collapsed. The government cited EU rules that make a bailout illegal as they refused the firm a bailout loan. Up to 4,000 jobs in Scunthorpe (plant pictured bottom right), North Lincolnshire, 800 in Teesside and 20,000 in the UK supply chain are at risk. It is illegal under EU law for members to offer state aid to companies in case it distorts single market competition (inset, the decline in UK steel manufacturing over the years). But exceptions can be made in cases where more than 15,000 jobs will be lost. Communities affected by the collapse said it 'will crucify Scunthorpe' as calls for nationalisation combined with demands the UK leaves the EU immediately.

Storks are set to become the first to breed in the UK for 600 years after reintroduction

High up on an old oak tree in the grounds of Sussex's Knepp Castle Estate, two birds are patiently waiting for their three eggs to hatch. And when the chicks do smash their way out of their shells, they will also break a 600-year absence of storks being born in the UK.While white storks will sometimes be glimpsed flying in the skies above Britain, the last known birth of a chick was 1416.
