A Mississippi store owner has admitted using the n-word after he was caught on camera shouting the racial slur at black customers on Saturday.

Terry Pace was unapologetic as he defended his use of the racist word at Hometown Furniture in Southaven, south of Memphis.

Pace, sporting a black eye, told WREG: 'I called them the N-word when it was over with. When it was all over with, and they kept mouthing off to me. Yes ma'am, I used the N-word.'

Shocking footage showed Pace shouting at the black customers outside the shop as an onlooker films the abuse on their phone.

Defending his actions, he added: 'I don't care what they say. I did what I felt like was right. You weren't there. You didn't hear it. You didn't hear all the stuff I heard.'

Pace says he was provoked into using the word and was left with a black eye during the incident.

But witnesses say they could not believe what they were hearing and that Pace was 'aggressive' during the altercation.

James Mayes said: 'I couldn't believe it. You hear people on TV saying these things, but to hear it in person just so aggressively was really off-putting.'

Businesses and residents in the area have already had problems with Pace who has been at that location for just two months, according to WREG.

And one local even alleges Pace refused to give finance to black people 'because they don't pay their bills'.

Business owner Marvin Clark said: 'He was like, "No. I don't finance, because the only people that want to get furniture financed is the colored. And they don't pay their bills." Yes. This is what he told me, and I let that go.'

The property manager for the business complex, Radhya Spencer, said they will not renew the lease for the property when it is up next month.

Southaven police were said to have been called to the store, but no report was filed.
