‘You’re not black!' Khloe Kardashian is brutally criticized for wearing her hair in cornrows while on vacation - as Instagram users accuse the reality star of cultural appropriation

  • Khloe, 34, visited Turks and Caicos with friends last week to celebrate Kourtney Kardashain's 40th birthday while on the beach
  • For the vacation, Khloe fashioned her blonde hair into small cornrows
  • She then shared multiple pictures from the vacation on her Instagram, but she was met with criticism for the hairstyle she chose for the trip
  • Commenters accused the reality star of culture appropriation for the hair
  • Kim Kardashian West, 38, has previously been accused of culture appropriation after modeling long black braids and calling them 'Bo Derek Braids'

Khloe Kardashian has been accused of culture appropriation, again, after her trip to Turks and Caicos this past week to celebrate Kourtney Kardashian's 40th birthday.

During the beach getaway, the 34-year-old posed on the beach with small cornrows in her blonde hair. But this only upset followers who thought Khloe was attempting to appropriate black culture.

Thousands of comments expressed outrage at the reality star for the multiple pictures of herself on the beach modeling the cornrows.

Pictures from the trip included Khloe lounging on the beach in a one-piece swimsuit, playing with one-year-old daughter True, and posing with her friends Malika Haqq and Khadijah Haqq McCray.

What is cultural appropriation?

Cultural appropriation in its simplest form is when someone adopts something from a culture that doesn't belong to them.

This could be a hairstyle or a way of speaking.

The Everyday Feminism website says: 'Unlike cultural exchange, in which there is a mutual interchange, appropriation refers to a "particular power dynamic in which members of a dominant culture take elements from a culture of people who have been systematically oppressed by that dominant group."'

But Khloe was also modeling the controversial hairstyle in all of the pictures, with a number of followers taking issue to it.

'You not black stop with these hairstyles,' one upset commenter wrote. 'It's a mockery and it's not cute.

Another commenter wrote: 'Having a black kid doesn't give you permission to appropriate black hair, you know. Just saying...'

The mom to daughter True had the one-year-old with basketball player Tristan Thompson, who is black. But commenters felt her daughter was not a reasonable excuse for her to model the braids.

'Just because ur child is black doesn't mean u get to rock OUR cornrows,' someone commented.

Other people came to the defense of Khloe, as they couldn't understand why she was not allowed to have her hair braided for the beach vacation.

'Everyone saying shes not black. Why is it that we white women can't braid our hair, but colored women can wear wigs?' A person questioned over the controversy. 'I don't get it. Its hair. Calm the F down.'

There was also the opinion that other cultures embracing black hair could work to celebrate the style, not appropriate it.

'Love it that people are embracing our African roots and culture,' one fan commented. 'When you rock braids just remember where it came from.'

In March, Khloe was accused again of culture appropriation by followers after attending Diana Ross' 75th birthday party wearing a curly wig to match the famed singer.

People at the time thought Khloe's attempt to celebrate Diana was poor because she was mirroring the black singer's curly locks — but the reality star ignored all the criticism at the time.

Her sister Kim Kardashian West, 38, has also been accused of culture appropriation on multiple occasions for modeling long cornrows.

Scrutinized: Kim called the braids her 'Bo Derek braids' after the actress, which only further angered people online

Scrutinized: Kim called the braids her 'Bo Derek braids' after the actress, which only further angered people online

These accusations came after the KKW Beauty founder posted a series of pictures of herself in a motel room while modeling platinum blonde braids.

In a Snapchat that angered the public, Kim called the braids 'Bo Derek braids'. She was referencing the actress' appearance in the 1979 film, 10.

People were outraged by the comment because they thought it was 'disrespectful' to the culture that first modeled the hairstyle.

Similar to what is happening currently to Khloe following her vacation pictures, Kim received a slew of comments accusing her of culture appropriation and attempting to be black.

Other commenters also slammed the reality star for calling them 'Bo Derek Braids' instead of Fulani braids or cornrows.

These instances have never stopped Kim or Khloe from modeling the hairstyles they want. Instead, they tend to ignore the critics and accusations of culture appropriation.
