In the snap. which Sophie captioned: 'The pack survived', she is sat with co-stars Maisie Williams and Isaac Hempstead-Wright.

Showing this was in between takes, Maisie, 22, sported some very un-Westeros inspired shades as the group relaxed in the dragon pit in Kings Landing.

Sporting a whimsical smile, Isaac flashed his bare legs as he waited for filming to commence.

Sophie paid tribute to Sansa Stark, as the show reached its climax with the character being named Queen of the North.

Taking to Instagram, she wrote: 'Sansa, Thank you for teaching me resilience, bravery and what true strength really is. Thank you teaching me to be kind and patient and to lead with love. I grew up with you.

'I fell in love with you at 13 and now 10 years on.. at 23 I leave you behind, but I will never leave behind what you’ve taught me.

'To the show and the incredible people who make it, thank you for giving me the best life and drama lessons I could have ever asked for. Without you I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Thank you for giving me this chance all those years ago.

'And finally to the fans. Thank you for falling in love with these characters and supporting this show right through till the end. I’ll miss this more than anything.'

In the final episode Arya (played by Maisie Williams), who saved humanity early in the season, decided to sail on to unknown lands, and her departure on a ship is among the series' final images.

'What's west of Westeros?,' she asked her Stark siblings. 'No one knows. It's where all the maps stop. It's where I'm going.'

The sixth and final episode in its much vaunted farewell season concluded with the expected death of Daenerys, the surprise anointment of crippled Bran Stark to king of Westeros and the rather symbolic destruction of the Iron Throne.

Winterfell maintained its traditional independence  - making Bran the 'lord of the Six Kingdoms and the protector of the realm.'

The death of Daenerys at the hands of Jon Snow and loyal dragon Drogon's reaction touched the hearts of viewers, including Twitter user @emiliacIarked who posted: 'the most heartbreaking part of this scene is the way drogon nudges daenerys. he has lost both his brothers and now his mother. he deserves so much better. nobody speak to me ever again.' (sic)

Emilia Clarke's character Daenerys was the last of the show's many, many major character deaths, given a Shakespearean send-off by Jon Snow, who watched her burn thousands of innocents and believed she had become a mad tyrant.

'You are my queen, now and always,' Jon said as he shoved a dagger into her, giving her what may have been the shortest reign of any monarch in Westeros.

A series high 18.4 million viewers watched last week's episode either live or through HBO Go and HBO Now
