Quentin Tarantino says Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is 'most personal' film because it was inspired by his childhood: 'This is my love letter to LA'

He has won two Oscars and been nominated for five.

But Quentin Tarantino considers his most recent project his 'most personal.'

The 56-year-old filmmaker told Esquire magazine that Once Upon A Time In Hollywood - which is his ninth feature film - is the closest to him because it was inspired by his childhood.

The highly-anticipated movie is set in 1969 Los Angeles and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as television star Rick Dalton, Brad Pitt as his long-time stunt double and Margot Robbie as movie star Sharon Tate.

It was said to be a 'love letter' to the last moments of Hollywood's golden age and he considers the story to be a 'memory piece' about Los Angeles, the city where he grew up and that fueled his passion for cinema.

Speaking about his film - which premiered on Tuesday at the Cannes Film Festival to a seven minute standing ovation - to Esquire magazine, he said: '[The film is] probably my most personal. I think of it like my memory piece.

'Alfonso [Cuarón] had 'Roma' and Mexico City, 1970. I had LA and 1969. This is me. This is the year that formed me. I was six years old then. This is my world. And this is my love letter to LA.'

DiCaprio, 44, agrees Tarantino that the movie is a 'homage to Hollywood' and feels the movie explores a 'seminal time' in American cinema.

He said: 'Well, first off, the chance to work with Mr. Tarantino. And certainly this time period was fascinating. It was this homage to Hollywood. I don't think there's been a Hollywood film like this - and by that I mean a film set in Hollywood and about Hollywood - which gets its nails dirty, getting into the everyday life of an actor and his stunt double.

'That year, 1969, is a seminal time in cinema history as well as in the world. Rick and Cliff, they're part of the old guard in Hollywood, but they're also trying to navigate this new world of the hippie revolution and free love.'

The movie depicts the shocking real-life murder of Sharon Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski (Rafał Zawierucha), at the hands of the Manson Family led by cult leader Charles Manson (Damon Herriman).

The early reviews of the period piece have been wildly positive as Daily Mail's Brian Viner called it a 'wildly enjoyable black comedy.'

He said: 'For me, his masterpiece will always be 1994's Pulp Fiction, but this isn't far behind, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt both on thumpingly fine form.

'The film takes us on a journey towards that terrible night, but on the way Tarantino is in incorrigibly playful mood and has enormous fun depicting certain fixtures of 60s Hollywood.

'There is also, this being a Tarantino film, a full repertoire of tricks – voiceovers, split-screens, slow-mo, flashbacks. But they all add to the fun.

'Tarantino recreates the era exquisitely and in a way has made the film a love-letter to his own square-eyed childhood.

The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw praised the Tarantino film for honouring the golden age of Hollywood and balancing the enjoyment of the story with the 'horror and cruelty' of the vile murders.

Labeling the film a 'pulp-fictionally redemptive take on the Manson nightmare in late-60s California' he said: 'I just defy anyone with red blood in their veins not to respond to the crazy bravura of Tarantino’s film-making, not to be bounced around the auditorium at the moment-by-moment enjoyment that this movie delivers – and conversely, of course, to shudder at the horror and cruelty and its hallucinatory aftermath.'

The film will be released in the US on July 26 2019 and the UK on August 15 2019.
