Tyra Banks, 44, reveals heartbreaking journey through failed IVF attempts before conceiving son York

She worked her way to the top of the modeling world.

But Tyra Banks admitted that she severely struggled to conceive after enduring multiple unsuccessful in vitro fertilization attempts, according to PEOPLE magazine.

The 44-year-old supermodel said that her heartbreaking journey 'was meant to be' as she gushed over her two-year-old son York.

'Everything that happened all got me to this,' the America's Next Top Model creator admitted to the publication. 

She's details her attempts to conceive in her soon-to-be-released memoir Perfect is Boring, written with her mother Carolyn London.

The America's Got Talent host revealed that she had tried 'for a while' to get pregnant with her then-boyfriend, photographer Erik Asla.

After one full year of failed attempts, Tyra admitted the journey was 'emotional'.

'There are so many stages,' Banks said of the process. 'It's like, 'Okay, it's a healthy embryo. Okay, it's month one.' 

'I was just constantly living on edge until I held him for the first time.'

The experience wasn't easy for anyone involved, and Tyra's mother had a first hand vantage point. 

'It hurt me so much to watch her struggle through that,' Carolyn admitted. 'She set up a nursery and in the bathroom she put a tile in the floor that said, 'Mommy Already Loves You.' And then she found out the IVF had failed. It ripped my heart out.'

Banks split with her boyfriend in October, but still shares in parenting responsibilities and enjoys every minute with her 'very verbal' son.
