Will Theresa May resign on Friday? Besieged PM is ordered to showdown with Tory backbench

Commons Leader Mrs Leadsom (top right, today) dramatically resigned from the Cabinet at the end of a day in which the Prime Minister was given 48-hours to save her leadership of the Conservative Party amid open mutiny. The move by the Brexiteer, who challenged Mrs May (left, today) for the leadership after the Brexit referendum in 2016, finally ended months of speculation that she was unable to square her beliefs with Mrs May’s handling of the UK’s exit from the EU. Announcing her departure in a letter (bottom right) she told the PM: ‘I no longer believe that our approach will deliver on the referendum result.' She has arranged a showdown with backbench kingmaker Sir Graham Brady on Friday as ministers lined up to demand she drop her promise of a Commons vote on a second Brexit referendum. Rumours had swept Westminster that there could even be a dramatic announcement tonight if Mrs May cannot defuse the angry backlash - although No10 dismissed the idea. But Sir Graham tonight told the 1922 Committee of Tory MPs that she had been given two more days with European elections - in which the Tories are expected to receive a hiding - taking place tomorrow. The so-called 'Pizza Club' of Eurosceptic ministers - including Mrs Leadsom and Liz Truss met earlier to consider their next move as the Tory infighting escalated. Abandoned cubs play fight, climb and explore their new surroundings before tucking into bowls of porridge in adorable footage from bear sanctuary

Abandoned bear cubs have been filmed play-fighting, gnawing their paws and tucking into bowls of porridge at a Russian bear sanctuary. The 16 cubs will be released into the wild. Adorable video shows the balls of fluff rolling around in the leaflitter and trying to grab each other's paws at the centre in Bubonitsy village, which is run by the International Fund for Animal Welfare. As well as playing the cubs are also shown munching on porridge made from buckwheat, oatmeal and eggs.

The children who defied the Nazis: Holocaust survivors and their descendants gather in Prague to recreate photograph taken after they were freed from concentration camp

In 1945, the group of 300 children posed for a photograph (top) in the Old Town Square in Prague, in what was then Czechoslovakia, after they were freed from Theresienstadt concentration camp in the German-occupied country. Aged between three and 17 at the time, they were taken to the Lake District to recover from the Nazi horrors they had witnessed, and became known as the Windermere Boys. Now in 2019, 10 of them are still alive and have gathered on the same spot in Prague to take the same picture again (bottom) with hundreds of their relatives, singing songs in Hebrew and Yiddish in front of a statue of religious reformer Jan Hus.
