It was revealed earlier this year that Call The Midwife has been renewed for at least three more seasons, taking it to 2022.

The highly-popular BBC series - which follows nurses working in London's East-End in the 1950s and 1960s - will be back for a minimum of two additional seasons in 2021 and 2022, after the current contract expires in 2020.

The announcement was made on Sunday by the BBC -  after the series' eighth season came to a close.

The new deal means the show will reach it's 10th birthday on the air, having debuted in 2012.

Season 8 has raked in excellent audience numbers, and has been the highest-rating returning drama of the year, with an average audience of nine million.

Executive producer Dame Pippa Harris has lauded the 'extraordinary creativity' of writer Heidi Thomas, and said: 'We are delighted and humbled by the continued warmth of the audience response.'

The drama's current plot-line is set in 1964, and the new seal will take it up to 1967 - poignant due to this being the year the Abortion Act was passed and it was made legal to terminate unwanted pregnancies in England, Scotland and Wales.
