Dawson's Creek 20th anniversary reunion left out the parents... who were 'blindsided' and 'hurt'

Mary-Margaret Humes and John Wesley Shipp played Dawson Leery's parents Gail and Mitch on Dawson's Creek for six seasons (1998-2003), but they were not invited to the 20th anniversary reunion.

'Okay, so let me get this off my chest as the initial hurt has subsided just a bit,' the 63-year-old actress wrote on Instagram Thursday.

'This was their choice...not ours...it was done behind our backs and we both were literally blindsided by it when we woke up yesterday in NYC and LA...we both did a short telephone interview after the fact but were never told about the reunion...Such a shame.'

Sympathetically, Holmes - who played girl-next-door Joey Potter - defended the onscreen couple on Instagram Friday.

'Mary Margaret and John were such a huge and important part of #dawsonscreek,' the 39-year-old mother-of-one wrote.

'I am so grateful to have worked with them and experience their kindness.'
