Brian Austin Green reveals he wanted Luke Perry to join Beverly Hills, 90210 revival before his tragic death: 'My honest hope was he would make time'

The cast of the iconic show Beverly Hills, 90210 may be returning to the same famous zip code for a revival of the hit 90s show, but things have certainly changed for the city and the show since it last aired 19 years ago.

Luke Perry, who played Dylan McKay on the show, died of a stroke at the age of 52 back in March.

His former co-star, 45-year-old Brian Austin Green, opened up about how he had hoped Perry would be joining the rest of the cast for the show's revival before his death, just weeks before the show's revival is slated to air.

Back in February, when it was announced that the show was going to be revived, Shannen Doherty and Luke Perry were the only two main actors who hadn’t announced that they would be reprising their old role, though Entertainment Weekly reported that they were told 'the door is open' for them, as the producers hadn't yet finalized the casting.

Doherty joined the cast two months later in April and Green said he was holding out hope that Perry would, too, but the Riverdale actor died before he could make that decision.

'Knowing that's not a possibility is really hard,' Green told PEOPLE, saying that Perry had actually already been involved in working with the new storyline.

'We talked to him on the phone because we still wanted his input,' Green told the celebrity news site. 'He was just that kind of guy.'

'It’s a hard situation,' Green said. 'I knew that going into it that Luke couldn’t do the reboot because he was shooting Riverdale. But my honest hope was he would make time to come do at least three episodes. He was awesome.'

And this isn't the first time Green has opened up about the loss of his friend.

Two weeks after his unexpected death, Green spoke out about his friend in an episode of his podcast, revealing that his former co-stars gathered together at the home of Gabrielle Carteris to mourn together.

The actor initially caught flack from people on social media for not posting a public tribute to Perry after he died.

He said he is still 'kind of shocked' that Perry is gone, but he's convinced his late pal is 'looking down' on him.

'Luke was a special guy,' Green said on his '... with Brian Austin Green' podcast, continuing, 'I'm still mourning over it, so there's a part of me that's kind of shocked that I'm speaking about Luke this way.

'We all knew that at some point we'd have to deal with losing cast members and friends but not this soon,' he said. 'Not at 52. Not in such an abrupt way.'

Despite being trolled on social media for not putting up a public tribute to the late star, Green revealed that he was grieving in his own way, adding finally: 'I know he's looking down and I know he's smiling.'

Gone too soon: 'I texted him after he passed knowing obviously that he can't text me back,' the Desperate Housewives actor revealed, adding, '...on some level [I was] hoping that he would text me back, or that he was out there somewhere'

And sadly, the actor's death isn't the only problem the revival has been hit with.

Recently, Variety reported that showrunner Patrick Sean Smith had left the show along with several unidentified writers.

Multiple sources claimed that the resignations were linked to creative interference, as one said that two of the main actresses on the series had been meddling with the creative side while another source attributed it to a network executive.

As far as how BH90210 will move forward, writer Paul Sciarrotta and creators Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler will absorb the showrunning duties, according to the outlet.

Insiders told The Hollywood Reporter that more writers have been hired amid the resignations.

The six episode revival, titled BH90210, will bring back the show's principal players: Gabrielle Carteris, 58, Tori Spelling, 45, Jason Priestley, 49, Shannen Doherty, 48, Jennie Garth, 47, and Ian Ziering, 55.

According to the network, the show will feature the cast playing 'heightened versions of themselves in a brand-new serialized drama — with a healthy dose of irreverence — that is inspired by their real lives and relationships.'

It's slated to premiere Aug. 7 at 8/7c on Fox.
