'That's really pro-woman of you': Kellyanne Conway turns on Nancy Pelosi for ignoring her in furious clash at the White House after Trump walk-out – then multimillionaire aide claims the Speaker treats her like she's 'her MAID or her DRIVER'

  • Then she complained: 'She treats me like I'm either her maid or her driver or her pilot or her makeup artist. And I'm not'

Counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway clashed with Nancy Pelosi during a stormy White House meeting Wednesday – then on Thursday accused the House speaker with treating her like her maid.

The extraordinary accusation followed on reports of their tense interaction during a furious White House meeting, where President Trump delivered a five-minute lecture and walked out of a gathering called to discuss infrastructure.

Conway approached Pelosi at the tail end of the meeting, then sarcastically called her 'pro-Woman' when the speaker refused to answer her question.

The White House counselor turned on Pelosi in a tense exchange in the Cabinet room, moments after President Trump had abruptly left the talks with Democrats - in fury at planned inquiries and possible impeachment hearings in Congress.

Taking aim at Trump, Pelosi said she was 'not surprised' he had left and told the room how Presidents Thomas Jefferson and Teddy Roosevelt would have acted differently.

Conway fired back, asking the Democratic leader if she had a 'direct response to the President'.

Pelosi replied: 'I'm responding to the President, not staff' – in a quote provided by Pelosi's spokesman.

Moments later, as the room emptied, Conway turned to Pelosi and said sarcastically: 'Great, that's really pro-woman of you'.

Conway took her complaints public in a Fox News interview Thursday.

'Then Speaker Pelosi went on and launched into some odd, self-curated history of infrastructure in our country. She talked about Thomas Jefferson and she got to Teddy Roosevelt,' according to Conway. She may have been summarizing remarks Pelosi made both Wednesday and Thursday about presidents who were able to push through major infrastructure initiatives.

'And so when she was finished I said, respectfully, "Madam Speaker, would you like to address some of the specifics the president talked about?" Conway told the network.

'And she said, "I talk to the president! I don't talk to staff!" in Conway's account.

Then she tore into Pelosi, who is worth at least $16 million and whose husband, Paul, is a wealthy real estate investor. Her average net worth is $58 million, CBS News reported.

'Because let's face it, she is the sixth-most rich member of Congress. She treats everybody like they're her staff,' claimed Conway.

'She treats me like I'm either her maid or her driver or her pilot or her makeup artist. And I'm not. And I said to her, "How very pro-woman of you!" per usual, because she's not very pro-woman. She's pro-some-women. A few women,' she vented.

According to her own 2017 financial disclosure, Conway has a Fidelity retirement account worth between $5million and $25 million, another Fidelity retirement account worth $1-5 million, and a checking account worth up to $1 million. Her husband George Conway, a prominent lawyer and top Trump critic, listed two separate employment retirement and income accounts valued at more than $1 million each.

She listed 75 firms for the prior year that paid her more than $5,000 in income. The couple have an $8 million mansion near DC's Embassy Row. They also have a $6 million in the wealthy enclave of Alpine, New Jersey.

Pelosi refused to get into the matter when asked about it at a Thursday press conference.

'I’m not going to talk about that. I responded as the speaker of the House to the president of the United States,' she said.

Tensions ran high after the President dramatically walked out of the infrastructure talks, declaring he would no longer work with Democrats unless they drop their investigations.

He said he told Pelosi: 'I want to do infrastructure. But you know what? We can't do it under these circumstances. So get these phony investigations over.'

In a hastily arranged press conference he demanded an end to the investigations, saying: 'I don't do cover-ups. So get these phony investigations over with.

'You can't investigate and legislate simultaneously. It just doesn't work that way.'

The President insists he was cleared by special counsel Robert Mueller's two-year probe - although it did not conclude one way or another whether he committed obstruction of justice.

A printed sign that read 'No Collusion' and 'No Obstruction' was posted on the President's lectern.

Since taking control of the House in January, Democrats have opened a series of probes into the Trump presidency, despite Mueller's findings.

Trump has ordered his administration to stop complying with the Democratic investigations.

Many rank-and-file Democrats - and some 2020 presidential candidates - have demanded impeachment hearings.

Pelosi has tried to steer a careful course on impeachment, recognizing how it could play into Trump's narrative of a crusade against him.

Speaking yesterday, she said: 'We believe the president of the United States is engaged in a cover-up.

'The fact is, in plain sight in the public domain, this president is obstructing justice and he's engaged in a cover-up - and that could be an impeachable offense.'

Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris are among the 2020 candidates who have argued for impeachment proceedings to begin.

Others including Joe Biden have followed Pelosi in taking a careful line, but the former Vice President has not ruled it out.

However, any impeachment bid is highly unlikely to remove Trump from office.

Even if the House votes to impeach him, two-thirds of the Republican-controlled Senate would have to vote to throw him out - a remote prospect.
