‘It was surprising how she handled her disease cause some people don’t,’ explains Smith.

‘There were no barriers. You know, how people put up barriers or walls of politeness where they don't talk about this or they don't talk about that.’

In a heartbreaking revelation, Smith then notes: 'She always thought that she would get well.’

It did however bring the two closer together, and reveal what a warm and loving person Fawcett was to those closest to her in this world.

‘You know, I saw the best of Farrah at the end. I saw someone who fought for life. Who fought to be here for her family and her loved ones.’

The two-hour documentary features new interviews with Alana Stewart, Fawcett’s close friend who helped record her cancer battle for the two-hour documentary Farrah’s Story; Bruce McBroom, the Hollywood photographer who shot Fawcett’s iconic swimsuit poster; Mela Murphy, Fawcett’s confidant and hairstylist; and Dr. Lawrence Piro, Fawcett’s primary physician; and Dr. Ursula Jacob, Fawcett’s physician in Germany who used alternative treatments for her cancer. The documentary also includes Barbara Walters’ landmark interviews with Fawcett and with Ryan O’Neal, Fawcett’s partner at the time of her death.

Fawcett was first diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2006 and had surgery to remove a tumor that year. But a year later the cancer had returned and had spread to her liver.

In 2007 she traveled to Germany to receive more aggressive treatments, but it was not effective and the actress ultimately passed away in 2009.

This Is Farrah Fawcett airs at 8pm Thursday on ABC.
