A This is Money investigation has revealed a string of incorrect forecasts sent to people now facing a poorer retirement than they expected. These cases point to a systematic failure, with potentially many more savers affected who haven't realised yet. Sandra Irving, pictured left, has been told her record puts it at around £22 a week less than the original figure she was given - a possible shortfall of nearly £23,000 over a typical 20-year retirement.Colin Murray, top right, and Vivienne Young, bottom left with husband Phil, are also affected.

How to pass on your wealth without paying the taxman: Inheritance tax cost Britons £5.4bn last year - and more are set to pay it
Of all the taxes we have to pay, inheritance tax is perhaps the most hated. And given it has cost the British public £5.4bn in the past tax year alone — almost double the amount paid eight years ago — it's not hard to understand why. Soaring house prices are partly to blame for the sharp increase and successive governments have sought to cash in. But if you are worried about inheritance tax, it can be avoided.

FTSE LIVE: Pound inches up as Theresa May resigns; Retail sales climb; Fever-Tree to give reality check; Mothercare losses widen
Theresa May resigned as British Prime Minister today, but the widely expected announcement barely shifted markets. The pound edged up this morning at the end of a week when it racked up its longest losing streak against the euro since that was launched in 1999. Meanwhile, the stock market was trading up across the board, with the blue chip FTSE 100, mid-cap FTSE 250 and smaller company indices all in the green. The ONS revealed decent retail sales figures as shoppers splashed out in April, despite the ongoing political and Brexit soap opera.

Motorists should get lower energy tariffs for charging electric cars 'off-peak' to reduce the strain during evenings, says report
Citizens Advice has called for a new 'smart' charging scheme that would reduce the impact on nation's electricity supply by rewarding plug-in car owners with cheaper tariffs at unsociable hours. It also called on the sector to ramp up efforts to allow these drivers to sell electricity back to the grid at supermarkets or their workplaces when their vehicles aren't being used and have surplus power.
SIMON LAMBERT: Nationwide says it's 'on your side' so why has it hacked 0.5% off a savings rate for children?
We recently received a letter from Nationwide, after the thinnest of apologies it said the rate on my daughter's account would be hacked back from 2.5 per cent to 2 per cent. It then goes on to mention another children's savings account, which some digging reveals should pay the same or more - except all there is not as it seems either.. So, why on earth would you mess with children’s savings like this?
Generation Z is seizing control of its finances - with more than a third already having £1,000 in savings
In research that examined current views towards both finances and savings from those in Gen Z (18-22 years old) and millennials (23-38 years old), data found that both generations were prioritising saving. It found that 52 per cent of millennials also have over £1,000 locked away - an unsurprising jump considering they could be more likely to be in full time work than Gen Z.

US activist investor pushes Alton Towers and Legoland owner Merlin to go private and claims 'significant interest' from buyers
A US activist investor has called on Merlin Entertainments, which runs Legoland, Alton Towers and the London Eye, to secure a deal to take the company private. San Francisco-based hedge fund ValueAct says Merlin has 'struggled' as a publicly listed company and claims the group's value would rise by around 30 per cent if it went private. In an open letter to Merlin's chairman, Sir John Sunderland, ValueAct's chief investment officer Mason Morfit and partner Jake Welch, said: 'Private ownership is simply better placed than current public shareholders to underwrite the investments Merlin must make, and to align employee incentives appropriately.'

ASK TONY: We paid Thomas Cook £40 to pick our seats but ended up at the back of the plane by the loos
We pre-booked seats and meals with Thomas Cook for our flight home from Skiathos, Greece, at a cost of £40 each. At check-in, we were told the seats had been overbooked, so were allocated 38E and 38F instead of 5A and 5B. However, these were the rearmost seats, adjacent to the toilets, making them probably the worst on the plane.
Is this the death of the phone upgrade? More and more people are ditching contracts for cheaper SIM-only deals
Until recently, when the latest smartphone hit the shelves, fans would queue around the block to be the first to get their hands on it. But now sky-high prices mean people are hanging on to their mobiles. Experts say those who have paid a lot for an expensive handset are choosing to keep them for longer than the traditional contract renewal terms of one or two years, taking out a cheaper Sim-only deal.

Tax peril of mix-and-match Isas: Savers can easily fall foul of the rules putting money in dribs and drabs
They run the risk of forfeiting a chunk of their Isa allowance unless they pick the right bank or building society. It's all down to the way each organisation has set up its Isas. Some let you mix fixed rate and easy-access accounts, and add to them whenever you want during the year. All are wrapped up together to count as just one cash Isa.

Driverless cars would improve traffic flow by more than a third as cars communicate and work together, claims University of Cambridge study
Researchers from the university programmed a small fleet of miniature robotic cars to drive on a multi-lane track and measured traffic flow when one stopped, with fully autonomous and simulated 'driven' cars. They found that the advantage of vehicles working together using artificial intelligence is that they will keep moving smoothly instead of bunching up - as a result improving traffic flow by 'at least 35 per cent'.
How to make a pension last a lifetime: The essential guide to financial success in retirement
Four years ago, the Government brought in a rule change that had dramatic consequences for retirees. The reforms, known as 'pension freedoms', gave savers unprecedented flexibility around how they spend their hard-earned cash in retirement. But with that freedom comes a huge responsibility to ensure you do not run out of money and end up living on the poverty line in old age.
Royal Mint's 26 'Great British A-Z' 10p coins are almost as rare as the Kew Gardens 50p: Is it worth checking your change for them?
Last year we revealed coin collectors would be handed the challenge of hunting down 26 new 10p coins, featuring an A-Z of what makes Britain great.2.6million of the coins were initially minted in 2018, starting from the Angel of the North and running to the Zebra Crossing, via James Bond, cricket, fish and chips and a teapot. How much do I need to save for my pension? A quick guide to retirement saving...
The amount you can save into a pension ultimately depends on what you can afford - but the longer you leave it the more you will need to save. We tend to put ambitious targets on our hoped-for income in retirement and then underestimate how much we will need to set aside to achieve that. So how much should you save?
What next for interest rates? Bank tipped to hold for most of 2019, as inflation stays low and Brexit is extended
Lower than expected inflation figures have added weight to expectations that interest rate rises will remain on hold throughout most of 2019. This combined with the Brexit extension is forecast to keep monetary policy steady, with rates held at 0.75 per cent. While unemployment is low and wages are rising, there are still concerns over Britain's consumer economy and business investment being stalled by continuing Brexit uncertainty.
What next for mortgage rates? Rates low as lenders chase business
The average two-year fixed rate mortgage rate has crept up by 0.13 per cent in the past month, possibly showing the first signs that the ongoing price war between lenders is drawing to a close.
