Francisco Tajeda, 38, from Brooklyn, revealed on TripAdvisor how staff at the DK Oyster restaurant in Mykonos refused to give their party a menu or show them prices, before surprising them with the final tab.

A member of New York's 69th Infantry Regiment, Francisco said he couldn't believe his eyes when he realized they'd been charged $661.41 (€591) for six plates of calamari and $167.87 (€150) for six beers - an eye-watering $27.97 per drink.

Francisco and his friends were also charged $66.46 (€59,40) for three Caesar salads appetizers with chicken, $20.14 (€17.80) for two bottles of water and an additional $20.18 ($18) for a single glass of tomato juice. 

However, representatives from the beach-side restaurant stand by their prices, insisting 'if you can't afford them, to avoid any bitterness,' opt for something cheaper.

Described as a 'modern day saga of hedonism and indulgence' with 'unsurpassed views' on its website, Cisco has warned other tourists to keep their distance from DK Oysters.

'Avoid this place, this place is a trap,' Rock said, posting an image of the check to TripAdvisor.

'They charged us 830 euros for calamari, 6 beers and 3 salads. The staff is not honest and refuse to provide a menu and prices. 

'Avoid this place at all costs! No pun intended.'

Speaking to DailyMail.com, Francisco said he was walking across the beachfront with five of his friends when a hostess from the DK approached them, and lured them into the restaurant with the promise of special offers.

The 38-year-old maintains that he and each of his friends repeatedly requested to see a menu to look at the prices, but the server never brought one and instead asked what they wanted. 

'Multiple times we asked for the menu, but she never brought one out,' Francisco said. 'But we were very hungry so we ordered Caesar salads without seeing the prices.

'After asking again for a menu to order mains but still not getting one, we thought the place seemed shady, so we said ‘lets get another appetizer, finish this beer, and get out of here.'

We regret the language of the person who posted this photo. Indeed, the prices are correct.

Although we feel that they reflect the level of our efforts, care and the quality of the food served in one of the world’s most coveted beaches, we can sympathize with an unsatisfied customer.

However, the word trap is not fair; not only because the prices are featured on a board next to the entrance so that everybody has an idea of the price range before entering our premises, but also because the menus and catalogs are offered to all before they order. Some ignore the catalogs and order directly. We do not stop them. How credible is someone who says that he/she requested the price of a dish/drink, was denied the information and despite that went ahead and ordered?

We have strict rules and routines regarding the catalogs, so I dispute any claim such as the one of our customer. I am sorry for any inconvenience he might have experienced, but I assure you this was not our intention. I hope that we are not considered a second class country/island/business that should be cheap.

Why is a luxury hotel allowed to charge 200-500 euros per night and nobody compares it to a room to let? Why does a customer of a small retailer pay for a jacket 50.00 euros and others charge up to thousands? Are we all criminals, thieves, bad people? I want to tell you from my heart that we value our customers, and we have carefully accounted for the cost in order to produce a product which we consider to be value for money.

Obviously, everybody is entitled to his/her opinion. We cannot all agree. That is why we have the freedom of choice and of course the freedom of expression. There is one objection though: we should express opinions based on experience and thorough knowledge – not through malignant comments on social media, which often are triggered by certain competitors advising against our restaurant. Many reviewers admit that, so I am entitled to be worried about this attitude.

You are all invited to come and try our cuisine, enjoy the unique breathtaking view, feel the vibes and relish our drinks and plates served always with a smile. But please, do check the prices first. If you can’t afford them, in order to avoid any bitterness, just opt for the special combo menu which may not be the most satisfying option, but allows a small glimpse for those who cannot afford the experience.

You are all welcome to try for yourselves. Please, please do come and be the judges. Don’t let people mislead you with dazzling numbers that only tell a small part of the story. Thank you all for your kind attention.

The group all decided to order the Calamari, but again they say they were left feeling perplexed when the waitress said she didn't know the price - and still didn't have a menu.

He said the group were told 'it depends how much the chefs makes' and that she would find out. Francisco says she didn't return until the check was placed on their table.

'When the bill came I was like "this is ridiculous, why an earth are we being charged this much?

'The beer we couldn't complain about too much, I've traveled a lot and sometimes beers can be expensive. But $600 for calamari we just couldn't understand - it was unbelievable.

'I was so angry I had to smoke a cigarette - and I haven't smoked since 2011.'

Reluctantly, Francisco say the group paid the bill because they were in a foreign country and wanted to avoid any conflict.

However, when showing their receipt to locals later the same day, Francisco claims he was told the group had fallen victim to a known 'tourist scam'.

'The locals told us it was illegal, as the tax was not on the ticket – it was an illegal receipt. They told us we’d been scammed.

'We went to the police and made a report but we had to get on a plane back home a couple of hours later, so there wasn’t much we could do.' 

The restaurant, located on the south of the island near Platis Gialos Beach, is generally well-reviewed, and holds an overall four-star rating.

But across the last few weeks, the restaurant has received a slew of scathing reviews from a growing list of angry customers, who, similarly to Cisco, warn of the establishment's extreme price-points and unfriendly serving staff.

Despite Kalamaras claims that their opulent service and surroundings warrant a hefty bounty, many have taken to Trip Adviser over the past few weeks to discredit their claims of grandeur.

'Simply a disgrace,' wrote one UK tourist, JackLK. 'We paid 38 euros for a Prosecco and Gin. Don’t go there. All locals knew what they did and it gives resort a bad name.... I went back to check as thought it was mistake. The manager ‘John’ just showed me price list. My fault really but truly an attitude that suggests they are better than they are.

'The daily ‘hello how are you’ from your staff are unfortunately as insincere as your business...Locals please get it closed down. It’s not good for your businesses when you're all so great.' 

In response to JackLK's review, DK reiterated their stance that the restaurant was being unfairly defamed.

'Since you admit that the prices were indeed those stated in the menu, I feel that some competitors have tried and succeeded in the defamation of our restaurant,' a DK representative wrote.

'We have already contacted the authorities against certain people spreading rumors against us. Because, you see, you are not the only one who returned this way. A couple came to our restaurant, left a huge tip and next morning the came (just like you), because a lady told them that we are overcharging. 

'If anyone reads carefully your review, it is evident that there is something really disgraceful. But it is not us. I am certain that if you think about it more carefully you might realize that too.'

Despite the restaurant's protests, countless other customers have preceded protests of Francisco and JackLK, uploading pictures of their hefty checks and insisting that something just doesn't add up. 

Some have even insisted they were forced to order more expensive items to drum up the cost of their pre-fixe meal.

'14.80 euros for 2 course meal with glass of wine plus sun beds the following day sounds great,' wrote Brit Elizabeth S.

'However the cocktails cost 17 euros each and the staff were more than reluctant to give us anything other than the A La Carte menu. At every opportunity they kept pushing items from the more expensive option. Bread 8 euros Water 8 euros, what a scam!' 

Another patron's check shows the customer was charged $16 for a single Sprite, while another was hit by a $365 charge for a single dish - a Tomahawk USA steak.

Others complained that they were not even given checks by the restaurant, while some even went as far to say that the staff had been rude and abusive.
