Chrissy Teigen admits she felt 'embarrassed' by her postpartum depression diagnosis and details her teenage mental health battles

Chrissy Teigen has admitted she felt 'embarrassed' that she suffered with postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter.

The model, 33, was prescribed antidepressants and began going to therapy after welcoming Luna in 2016, but didn't want to admit she was suffering.

In a candid chat with PorterEdit, she explained: 'I felt bad [about having postpartum depression] because we had so many resources.'

She continued: 'John was great and helpful. My mom was here… I was embarrassed.'

Chrissy, who also has son Miles, 12 months, with husband John Legend, initially chose to keep her diagnosis secret, but later shared an open letter about her experience in a bid to help other women who were suffering in silence.

Speaking to PorterEdit, the mother-of-two also revealed that she suffered with mental health problems in her childhood, but dismissed the severity of the issue.

She recalled: 'I was prescribed Lexapro [an antidepressant] when I was a teenager, and then I just quit cold turkey, not thinking it was a real thing.

'I thought everyone had problems like mine, like it was part of life.'

Chrissy now speaks candidly about her past experiences, and revealed her relationship with her family is better than ever.

Discussing the secret behind her six-year marriage with John, she mused: 'John and I believe a lot of different things. He shares his view, I'll explain mine. And it's just a dinner conversation for us.

'He knows everything I don't know. I know everything he doesn't know! That's why it works.'

She also credited her other half with helping her become more politically engaged, explaining: 'John's always been very politically active, and I probably wouldn't be if I wasn't with him. Seeing his passion is incredible.'

Chrissy also recalled when she first started dating John, and would invite her friends to his hotel room after he'd left.

She confessed: 'He would play a show at the Fillmore and he'd be staying down at the Ritz-Carlton.

'I'd stay there with him and then he'd leave really early the next morning, and I would call my friends and say, "He's gone! Come over." We'd eat these huge breakfasts.'

Chrissy's honesty and candour has also helped gain her a legion of social media followers, as she isn't afraid to call out other stars, or trolls, online.

However, whilst the Sports Illustrated cover star may be famed for her clap backs, she admitted she often regrets her jibes.

'Everything "big" I've ever said was just heat of the moment and sometimes very regrettable', she confessed. 'I just pop off too quick. Honestly, it's good to learn that's not necessarily the way to go every time.'

Chrissy added that she often finds herself actively seeking out negative comments from trolls, admitting that she just wants to be liked.

'Sometimes I will scroll through [comments] and I will just keep reading and reading the positive ones until I find something negative. And then I'll stop, and I'll be mad. Or sad,' she confessed.

'And I'm like, "Why did I keep going? There's no point in that." There's always going to be that person, no matter whose page you go to.

'The women I love and look up to have that s**t, too… It's funny when everyone thinks you're so tough and things just roll off your back and you don't care.

'It's good to care. I think you should want to be a respected, liked person. And it sucks when people don't like you. It makes you realize the power words have.'
