Tories and Labour are humiliated by Farage's Brexit Party in European elections

Nigel Farage's Brexit Party hailed an 'amazing' victory in the European elections today, securing the support of 36% of voters across Britain in a result that that crushed both the Tories and Labour and left each party facing a crisis over their position on Brexit. Despite only being launched six weeks ago, the Brexit Party has won at least 28 MEP seats - with the Conservatives dropping to fifth place across much of the country with just 9 per cent of the vote. The disastrous showing immediately sparked warnings from would-be leader Boris Johnson that things could get even worse for the Tories if the UK does not leave the EU by the end of October - deal or no deal. And Jeremy Corbyn was facing civil war within his party as critics blamed the party's poor third-place finish on his failure to back a second referendum - while the Remainer Lib Dems surged into third second place with the Greens just behind Labour in fourth. A jubilant Mr Farage demanded a role in the next round of negotiations with the EU, threatening to contest a general election if Britain does not leave by October 31. And speaking this morning he blasted the Tories for their handling of Brexit but said he would be willing to support a Conservative leader who promises to take Britain out of the EU with No Deal. He said: 'If we don't leave in October the Brexit party will go on to a general election. 'We are happy to help any leader who is genuine about us leaving the EU. We would like to be part of the negotiating team, use us and give us some responsibility, but they need to be prepared to leave with a clean break Brexit. Boris Johnson, Dominic Raab, Michael Gove - all of them voted for Mrs May's European treaty.'

Furious viewers slam BBC's 'biased' Euro election coverage that focused on Lib Dems and Greens rather than Brexit Party win - and allowed Alastair Campbell to accuse Farage of taking Russian money

Viewers felt the corporation's election broadcast had emphasised the strong performance of the Greens and Liberal Democrats rather than focusing on Mr Farage's (pictured) victory in the UK contest. They also took aim at BBC presenters for allowing former Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell to launch an attack on the Brexit Party's finances. Mr Campbell, a close former aide of Tony Blair, said Mr Farage's party had had the 'roubles coming in' - a reference to the Brexit campaign's alleged links to Russian money. However the Liberal Democrats also felt they had not been given enough airtime.

Leadership front runner Boris Johnson said the rout' in the polls will become a 'permanent haemorrhage' of voters unless the party takes dramatic action to win back furious Brexiteers.

Senior shadow ministers spoke out publicly after it slump to a predicted third behind the Brexit Party and the resurgent Lib Dems. Mr Corbyn said: 'This issue will have to go back to the people'

The unorthodox candidates who are headed to Brussels as MEPs

The European elections earthquake will deliver an extraordinary array of new British MEPs to Brussels including Jacob Rees-Mogg's sister Annunziata (centre right) who quit the Tories after 32 years. The Brexit Party will also be represented by a war hero, a former communist and an ex-NHS worker after Nigel Farage's men and women humbled the Tories and Labour. James Glancy (far left), a retired Captain in the Royal Marines awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross for fighting in Afghanistan, was elected in the south-west alongside former nurse Christina Jordan (far right), who came to Britain as an immigrant in 1985. As Labour lost votes to remain parties former Sheffield Lord Mayor Magid Magid (centre left) - whose election slogan was 'immigrants make Britain great' - was elected as a Green MEP in Yorkshire and Humber.

How furious voters turned the country Brexit blue

Nigel Farage's insurgents dominated the result from local authorities across England and Wales (map pictured left), evicting the main parties from key strongholds in the South East and London. Only in Scotland did the SNP managed to stave off the challenge from the Brexit Party. But there was also a wave of support for the Liberal Democrats and Greens south of the border, underlining the depth of the divisions in the UK.

Anger as controlled explosion of World War II bomb in London street wrecks cars and

Locals were left crying in the street as cars were wrecked (top) and home windows were blown in after a 'controlled explosion' of a 500lb Second World War bomb (bottom left) on a building site in Kingston, south west London. The blast, which left a huge crater, left residents wondering what damage an uncontrolled explosion might have cause. Army experts were called in to dispose of the bomb, and 1,500 residents were evacuated and a cordon was put in place. In many cases such bombs are taken away and disposed of in a remote location, so the decision to detonate this one where it was after packing tons of sand around it left locals assuming they would hear a muted bang. But one resident said they hears a 'massive explosion like thunder'. Others said they felt the walls of their homes shake. Pictured: Troops worked through the night to safely detonate the bomb (bottom right).
