I was self-employed and paid NI so why don't I get a full state pension?

Since my retirement in 2015 at the age of 65, I've been somewhat perplexed at having my state pension downgraded by £30 per week due to the fact that in 1987 I took out a self employed pension. The Department for Work and Pensions decision irks me very much.
