Residents of Virginia Beach have been left fuming after Memorial Day weekend beachgoers left piles of garbage on the shore.

Public work crews and citizen volunteers responded to the Chic's Beach area of Virginia Beach before dawn on Monday to clean up after the mess left after the annual 'Floatopia' party.

A total of ten tons of garbage was removed from the shore, compared to the average of one ton following a typical weekend, WAVY-TV reported.

Video of the disgusting aftermath shot by resident Melissa Noel quickly went viral after she posted it on Facebook, drawing furious reactions from locals and elected officials alike.

'I was disappointed to wake up this morning to see images trash all over our beautiful Chesapeake Bay beach after Sunday’s festivities,' city councilman Michael F. Berlucchi wrote on Twitter.

'We can do better than this! Let’s work together to keep our City beautiful,' he said.

'Each one of you is a piece of trash- you left a piece of your ignorant $@@ on the beach,' resident Linda Berardi wrote on Facebook.

'You are NOT welcome. Go back to your trash heap neighborhoods and don’t come back again!' Berardi continued.

'I saw what your event left behind this year... I hope no one ever gives you permission again,' commented Philip Taylor.

'This is disgusting! How can people be so disrespectful of mother earth, Our water, our land and our fellow humanity? People have to stop this abuse,' wrote Mari Kelley.

One resident recommended that next year the event be moved to the Virginia Beach landfill.

The resident noted that 'there's a pond behind the landfill you all can float in. You should feel more at home there.'

Floatopia is an annual event in Virginia Beach that celebrates the unofficial start to summer.

'It’s absolutely ridiculous the condition they left the beach in,' wrote resident Sam Seal on Facebook.

'People of VB and pretty much any tourist destination or otherwise always wonder why we can’t have fun events without all the hassle,' Seal said.

'This is why. People are the reason we can’t ever have or do anything fun. Good job garbage humans.'
