Cate Blanchett looks almost unrecognisable with platinum blonde hair and pink and purple shell suit on the set of TV series Stateless

She's known to change her looks for various blockbuster films.

And on Tuesday, Cate Blanchett looked barely unrecognisable as she stepped off the set of the upcoming TV mini-series, Stateless, in Adelaide

Cate, 50, who also co-produces the six-part series with her husband Andrew Upton, sported a shaggy peroxide-blonde bob and wore minimal makeup.

Filmed in Adelaide, the local production will follow four strangers stuck in an Australian desert-based detention centre.

The characters include a flight attendant fleeing a cult, an Afghan refugee, a down-and-out Australian father and a bureaucrat entangled in a scandal.

Starring Offspring actress Asher Keddie and The Handmaid's Tale star Yvonne Strahovski, Cate, said the new series will have 'global resonance.'

Cate said in a statement: 'Whilst this story centers on Australia, the dilemmas that it explores through four absorbing characters will resonate globally.

'It's the desire for personal freedom, the need for social stability, an escalating lack of faith in the political process and the deeply unsettling impact this has on individual lives.'

Cate has become the latest Hollywood celebrity to make the move to TV, joining the likes of fellow Hollywood A-listers, Meryl Streep like Tom Hardy and Julia Roberts.
