A rare single-seat aircraft was found abandoned with $500,000 worth of drugs near the Mexico-United States border last Thursday.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection [CBP] agents found the modified ultralight plane on a improvised dirt-filled landing spot south of the Tuscon station in Arizona.

Border Patrol officers commanding the Nogales and Tuscon stations were alerted by the Air and Marine Operations after it detected the suspicious aircraft at about 11pm local time.

Canine unit assigned to the Border Patrol detected 142 pounds of methamphetamine and over 200 grams of fentanyl with a street value of $500,000

According to a CBP press release, the immigration agents found two large plastic storage canisters attached to the aircraft's fuselage. 

Border Patrol canine units inspected the aircraft and discovered numerous methamphetamine packages inside the containers.

Agents took the drugs and aircraft to the Nogales Border Patrol Station and confirmed that the packages contained over 143 pounds of methamphetamine and more than 200 grams of fentanyl. 

The person operating the aircraft was not located following a helicopter search led by the Air and Marine Operations.

A spokesperson for the CBP told DailyMail that there have been 'numerous attempts by ultralight aircraft in the past' to smuggle drugs across the border.
