Meryl Streep didn't even read the script before signing on to star in Big Little Lies Season 2

Meryl Streep needed very little convincing to join the cast of HBO's Big Little Lies for its second season, debuting June 9.

During a conversation with Streep, Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Laura Dern, moderated by Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Radhika Jones (via Variety), Streep said she didn't even need to read the script.

'[My agents] asked me, "don’t you want to read it?" And I said no,' Streep said with a laugh at the event, held at Wing Soho in New York City on Wednesday.

'The first season was the greatest thing on television,' Streep added, while also gushing about co-star Shailene Woodley, who she said, 'is just a miracle in this.'

The series was originally meant to be contained in the first season, adapted from the Lianne Moriarty novel of the same name, with the first season finale matching the end of the novel.

HBO announced in February 2018, though, that a second season was ordered, with series creator David E. Kelly writing seven new scripts based on a story by Moriarty.

'You get to explore [the characters] and the consequences on a deeper level,' Kidman said about the new season. 'You see their lives unfold in a much deeper way.'

Another reason the show continued was its incredible reception, including four Golden Globe wins and eight Emmy wins.

'The year at the Golden Globes when Oprah gave that incredible speech…and we were able to go up there and talk about this show was truly one of the greatest moments of my life and career,' Witherspoon added.

Streep also admired her co-stars for finding material like this, stating, 'I am of a generation that waited to be asked to dance, but I’m so admiring of you for getting out in front of stuff, for being on the balls of your feet, for seeking out material.'

Streep signed on play Mary Louise Wright on Big Little Lies Season 2 in January 2018, just weeks after its four Golden Globe wins.

Mary Louise Wright is the mother of Alexander Skarsgard's Perry, who was killed in the first season of the show, and mother-in-law to Kidman's Celeste.

Mary arrives in Monterey looking for answers from The Monterey Five - Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Renata (Laura Dern) and Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz).

Reese Witherspoon also took to her Instagram story from the event, sharing images with her and Streep finding the perfect napping couch, plus photos from the panel.
