Give employees a share in their company AND tackle bosses' high pay

Many of us go to work each day without owning even a small part of the company we spend more time with than our family. Plans are afoot to change this on both sides of the Atlantic though. High executive pay has led to calls for caps linking the highest paid to the median worker - a better plan would be to blend that idea and the shares for workers one.

Car maker mega-mergers based on mutual weakness are inevitable

But today, the need for car makers to be big has gone up a couple of gears, and this week's news that Fiat Chrysler and Renault are planning to merge signals a new accelerated phase in this process is underway.

Gap between asking and selling house prices widens in buyer's market

Sellers are knocking more off property asking prices in a bid to get homes sold in what is increasingly becoming a buyer's market, new data suggests. On average, the gap from asking price to selling price across UK cities is up from 3.3% in 2018 to 3.9%, according to Zoopla. However, the headline figure mask a gap between major regional cities where markets are more robust and London, where home sellers struggle to meet the listing price.

The list of claims also includes a swing on a low-hanging vine that ended in disaster, a bus that caught on fire and a fall down a manhole.

Fibre broadband: Internet speed and the best broadband deals now

There is often confusion over which type of broadband is really the fastest and how much speed the average person really needs to power their internet. I was self-employed and paid NI so why don't I get a full state pension?

Since my retirement in 2015 at the age of 65, I've been somewhat perplexed at having my state pension downgraded by £30 per week due to the fact that in 1987 I took out a self employed pension. Even though I have a record of 50 years of NI contributions yet my pension is still reduced. I feel that over the years I've done the right thing. The Department for Work and Pensions decision irks me very much.

Want one-off financial advice? What do you get and how much does it cost?

Many people could benefit from one-time help over some aspect of their finances, and this need not tie you into a long-term relationship with an adviser. Paying ongoing fees is not compulsory, and unless you are getting a substantial level of ongoing help in exchange each year, might not be value for money. It's perfectly acceptable to ask an adviser for expert assistance on a particular financial concern, agree between you it will be a single transaction, pay up, and walk away.

Sage of Omaha has made £65bn...here's how to learn the art of Buffettology!

There is probably no more successful investor living on planet earth today than Warren Buffett. Although now aged 88, he very much remains a cult figure among investors - not just in the United States but worldwide - as a result of his wonderful eye for picking long-term investment winners. An eye that has remained focused for nigh on half a century. Razor sharp. Eagle like. Earlier this month, some 40,000 shareholders flocked to the annual general meeting of Berkshire Hathaway, the company he has run since 1970 and through which he makes his astute investments.

As Fiat plots £27bn merger with Renault: Backlash over diesel plunges car industry into

car makers are struggling with the technology required to mass-produce electric-fuelled cars. And, after this link-up, there could be further copycat mergers and co-operation deals. One of the most talked about tie-ups has been a possible deal between Indian-owned Jaguar Land Rover, Britain's flagship car maker, and the French group Peugeot, which owns the UK's Vauxhall marque. Car firms everywhere are being forced to accelerate the transition from fossil-fuel internal combustion engines to hybrids (half-electric, half-petrol), fully electric cars and engines fuelled by hydrogen.

When will UK interest rates rise?

Lower than expected inflation figures have added weight to expectations that interest rate rises will remain on hold throughout most of 2019. This combined with the Brexit extension is forecast to keep monetary policy steady, with rates held at 0.75 per cent. While unemployment is low and wages are rising, there are still concerns over Britain's consumer economy and business investment being stalled by continuing Brexit uncertainty.
