Thousands of people triggered a cut to their tax bill last year by questioning whether their council band is correct, according to official figures from the Valuation Office Agency. In 2018/19, 31% of households who asked for their band to checked, saw their bills fall as a result.

FTSE CLOSE: Shares pick up after torrid trade war slide; De La Rue tanks after profit plunge; Watches of Switzerland surges on market debut
The trade spat between the US and China took an interesting turn yesterday when Beijing threatened to restrict rare earth mineral exports to the US. 'The very fact that China played that card highlights how serious the situation has become,' says CMC Markets. Indeed, the news sent global stocks into free fall and the footsie shed 1.4 per cent. The blue chip index is attempting to regain some ground in early trading today. Meanwhile, transport giant FirstGroup said it will sell off its Greyhound business as it turns its focus to the North American market.

SIMON LAMBERT: How to give employees a share in the company they work for AND tackle bosses' soaring pay
Many of us go to work each day without owning even a small part of the company we spend more time with than our family. Plans are afoot to change this on both sides of the Atlantic though. High executive pay has led to calls for caps linking the highest paid to the median worker - a better plan would be to blend that idea and the shares for workers one.
ALEX SEBASTIAN: Car maker mega-mergers based on mutual weakness are the inevitable consequence of a new environmental reality for the industry
Car companies have always needed to be big to compete, aside from a handful targeting small numbers of super-rich buyers with limited edition offerings. But today, the need for car makers to be big has gone up a couple of gears, and this week's news that Fiat Chrysler and Renault are planning to merge signals a new accelerated phase in this process is underway.
Could you be a Premium Bond winner but not know it? There's more than £61m in unclaimed prizes... and we reveal where the holders live
The amount of prize money that has been left unclaimed - and which has now been sorted by location - reveals Premium Bond-holders in Manchester are missing out on nearly £2 million, and more than 40,000 prizes are unclaimed in Kent. Around 79 billion Premium Bonds are held by 21 million savers, who can invest anything between £25 and £50,000. Each £1 will buy you a Premium Bond, and each month winning numbers are drawn using Ernie, NS&I;'s unique numbers machine. This month, 3,292,546 prizes worth £94,111,900 were won - and two lucky bond-holders received £1 million each.
A buyer's market: Gap between property asking and sale prices across major cities widens as sellers accept bigger discounts
Sellers are knocking more off property asking prices in a bid to get homes sold in what is increasingly becoming a buyer's market, new data suggests. On average, the gap from asking price to selling price across UK cities is up from 3.3% in 2018 to 3.9%, according to Zoopla. However, the headline figure mask a gap between major regional cities where markets are more robust and London, where home sellers struggle to meet the listing price.
Green machine: Ferrari's 211mph SF90 Stradale is its first ever PLUG-IN HYBRID supercar that will cost around £400k and go 15 miles using only electric power
The Italian firm says its new 211mph SF90 Stradale is 'the most powerful Ferrari ever' developing a total of 1,000 horsepower that helps it accelerate from rest to 62mph in just 2.5 seconds. And it can travel up to 15.5 miles (25km) in zero-emissions electric power only - allowing it to enter cities which ban use of conventional petrol engines.
A powerful sneeze, an unwelcome bat bite and a fierce gust of wind: We reveal ten of the UK's most unlucky travel insurance claims
A powerful sneeze, a gust of wind and a bat bite are three of the most unlucky - and in some cases bizarre - travel insurance claims made by customers, new data exclusive to This is Money has revealed. These are real reasons people have had to make claims on their insurance, according to Cover-More. The list of claims also includes a swing on a low-hanging vine that ended in disaster, a bus that caught on fire and a fall down a manhole.
How much internet speed do you really need? Everything you need to know about fibre broadband - and the best deals now
There is often confusion over which type of broadband is really the fastest and how much speed the average person really needs to power their internet. Standard copper broadband is often no longer sophisticated enough to handle the public's ever increasing data download needs, but are you one of the people who would be better off with fibre broadband and how fast do you need to go?
I was self-employed and paid NI for 50 years - why don't I get a full state pension? Steve Webb replies
Since my retirement in 2015 at the age of 65, I've been somewhat perplexed at having my state pension downgraded by £30 per week due to the fact that in 1987 I took out a self employed pension. Even though I have a record of 50 years of NI contributions yet my pension is still reduced. I feel that over the years I've done the right thing. The Department for Work and Pensions decision irks me very much.
Tesco Bank can't guarantee customers' home loans will be sold to an active lender, as MPs express fears over 'mortgage prisoners'
Some 23,000 customers were left in the lurch last week as Tesco Bank announced it was exploring the sale of its mortgage book after ceasing all new lending. The 27 MPs from a cross-party group sent a letter to Tesco Bank chief executive Gerry Mallon urging the lender to 'repay its customers' trust' by only exploring a sale to an active lender.
Women savers plan to retire on £168k, while men expect to build pots worth a quarter of a million
Women savers are on course to end up with pension pots two thirds the size of men's, research by Brewin Dolphin reveals. Lower pay and career breaks to care for family are still holding back women's ability to save for old age - but younger generations are better off than those currently reaching retirement.
Want a piece of one-off financial advice? Here's what should you ask for and expect to get... and how much it might cost
Many people could benefit from one-time help over some aspect of their finances, and this need not tie you into a long-term relationship with an adviser. Paying ongoing fees is not compulsory, and unless you are getting a substantial level of ongoing help in exchange each year, might not be value for money. It's perfectly acceptable to ask an adviser for expert assistance on a particular financial concern, agree between you it will be a single transaction, pay up, and walk away.

One lucky contributor even managed to snap up £2,780 on a sale - not bad for a single iPhone snapshot.

MARKET REPORT: Online grocer Ocado sees shares on slide as analysts back arch-rival Today Development Partners
Barclays Capital's James Anstead reckons Today Development Partners (TDP) is on to something, having been set up by Jonathan Faiman, who co-founded Ocado with Tim Steiner and Jason Gissing. Anstead pointed to the recruitment by TDP of Jon Hillary, one of Ocado's longest-serving employees. TDP was recently chosen by Waitrose to help develop its online offering, replacing Ocado (down 53.1 per cent, or 37.5p at 1167.5p).
Southend airport owner Stobart Group's losses swell as firm admits dispute with former boss Tinkler cost it £5.2m
Southend airport owner Stobart Group slumped to a £42.6million loss in the last year, down 199 per cent from a year earlier. The group said it spent over £5million on a protracted legal dispute with former chief executive Andrew Tinkler. Stobart also made a £15.5million loss on discontinued operations during the period, including Stobart Air and its aircraft leasing business Propius, which it sold to the Connect Airways consortium in February.

How to invest like Warren Buffett: From picking shares, to fund managers who follow his lead... learn the art of Buffettology!
There is probably no more successful investor living on planet earth today than Warren Buffett. Although now aged 88, he very much remains a cult figure among investors - not just in the United States but worldwide - as a result of his wonderful eye for picking long-term investment winners. An eye that has remained focused for nigh on half a century. Razor sharp. Eagle like. Earlier this month, some 40,000 shareholders flocked to the annual general meeting of Berkshire Hathaway, the company he has run since 1970 and through which he makes his astute investments.
TONY HETHERINGTON: How can this firm of muggers at Global Spread Exchange even sleep at night?
I was contacted by a 'David Green' and was persuaded to invest £500, having been told that his company is approved by the Financial Conduct Authority. Later, a 'Blake Crawford' rang to say he had made £245 profit for me and urged me to invest a further £1,000. I told him I would not add to the £500, though other people have since called from the company with the same request. Now I find I cannot contact them.

Savers misled by wrong state pension forecasts that left their plans 'in tatters' - but the Government only admits to 'occasional' errors
A This is Money investigation has revealed a string of incorrect forecasts sent to people now facing a poorer retirement than they expected. These cases point to a systematic failure, with potentially many more savers affected who haven't realised yet. Sandra Irving, pictured left, has been told her record puts her state pension at around £22 a week less than the original figure she was given - a possible shortfall of nearly £23,000 over a typical 20-year retirement.Colin Murray, top right, and Vivienne Young, bottom right with husband Phil, are also affected.
As Fiat plots £27bn merger with Renault: Backlash over diesel plunges car industry into crisis
car makers are struggling with the technology required to mass-produce electric-fuelled cars. And, after this link-up, there could be further copycat mergers and co-operation deals. One of the most talked about tie-ups has been a possible deal between Indian-owned Jaguar Land Rover, Britain's flagship car maker, and the French group Peugeot, which owns the UK's Vauxhall marque. Car firms everywhere are being forced to accelerate the transition from fossil-fuel internal combustion engines to hybrids (half-electric, half-petrol), fully electric cars and engines fuelled by hydrogen.

On this week's podcast, we dive into what is currently a weird world of mortgages: where a greater supply of money to lend than demand to borrow means there are some very cheap deals on offer.

How much do I need to save for my pension? A quick guide to retirement saving...
The amount you can save into a pension ultimately depends on what you can afford - but the longer you leave it the more you will need to save. We tend to put ambitious targets on our hoped-for income in retirement and then underestimate how much we will need to set aside to achieve that. So how much should you save?
What next for interest rates? Bank tipped to hold for most of 2019, as inflation stays low and Brexit is extended
Lower than expected inflation figures have added weight to expectations that interest rate rises will remain on hold throughout most of 2019. This combined with the Brexit extension is forecast to keep monetary policy steady, with rates held at 0.75 per cent. While unemployment is low and wages are rising, there are still concerns over Britain's consumer economy and business investment being stalled by continuing Brexit uncertainty.
What next for mortgage rates? Rates low as lenders chase business
The average two-year fixed rate mortgage rate has crept up by 0.13 per cent in the past month, possibly showing the first signs that the ongoing price war between lenders is drawing to a close.
