With the second season of Big Little Lies about to hit the small screen, fans of the popular drama are already wondering there will be a third installment of the series.

However, bestselling author and Big Little Lies creator Liane Moriarty has revealed season two may be the last.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph on Saturday, Liane, 52, said: 'I feel like there won't be [a third season].'

She added: 'I feel like this will be it … it was only meant to be one season. My feeling is that this will probably be it.' 

Fans should not feel bereft though, as producers Nicole Kidman, 51, and Reese Witherspoon have bought the film rights to Moriarty's other novels.

Indeed, it turns out that Kidman has had a major role to play in the success of Big Little Lies.

Reese Witherspoon, who plays Madeline Martha Mackenzie on the series, told Saturday's BW magazine that it was Kidman who talked her into taking on the role. 

Despite being reluctant at first, the 43-year-old said she's come to love playing 'a mother trying to do the best she can'. 

'I've always had fun playing Madeline even though I was reluctant to play the character initially,' Reese told BW. 

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph on Saturday, Liane, 52, said: 'I feel like there won't be [a third season]. I feel like this will be it … it was only meant to be one season. My feeling is that this will probably be it'

'It was Nicole who talked me into playing her, and I'm so glad she did,' the mother-of-three added.

'She's a mother trying to do the best she can, so playing her is kind of like second nature to me.' 

Reese's character Madeline is married to Ed Mackenzie (Adam Scott) and shares custody of a daughter with Nathan Carlson (James Tupper).

She is also keeping secret a previous affair with a local theatre producer Joseph Bachman (Santiago Cabrera). 

Big Little Lies follows the lives of five women who struggle with motherhood, marital issues and judgment in their upscale neighbourhood in California.

The series also stars, Nicole, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz and new addition Meryl Streep.
