On February 27, Marks & Spencer announced it was joining forces with online retailer Ocado – acquiring half its UK business for up to £750million. M&S; said back then that the deal would be largely financed by a £600million rights issue and that this year’s dividend would be cut. On May 22, both events duly came to pass. Alongside yet another set of disappointing full-year results, chief executive Steve Rowe unveiled a 26 per cent cut in the dividend to 13.9p and a one-for-five rights issue at £1.85.

Do your kids have his card? Meet Tom Blomfield, the 33-year-old do-it-all bank boss who wants to file your tax return
Monzo may well be the most popular bank that you've never heard of. Only four years after it was founded as a basic pre-paid card - the digital bank has reached the two million customer mark, having attracted an almost cult-like following. That has made it by some stretch the most popular new 'challenger' bank trying to break the hegemony of the giants: Lloyds, Barclays, RBS and HSBC.

Clive Lewis, the chairman of fashion chain River Island, is the latest boss to demand reform of the discredited business rates system. He has added his voice to that of prominent retailers who have spoken out, including Tesco chief Dave Lewis and Sebastian James, the boss of Boots. River Island, which has 300 stores and employs around 10,000 staff, is part of an informal group of High Street shops including Dixons Carphone, Holland & Barrett, JD Sports, Fat Face, Pret a Manger and Specsavers, who have got together to lobby the Government on rates.

'I lost my Bitcoin fortune...until I found I'd left it on a computer at my mum's': 80s pop icon Greg Kane tells how a big investment gave him a shock
Musician Greg Kane struggled to pay his mortgage in the 1990s despite making millions in the pop duo Hue and Cry a decade earlier. He splashed out on Ferraris, Porsches and luxury holidays at the height of his fame, but was then forced to work as a sound engineer to make ends meet. Now 52, he lives in Glasgow with new partner Rhona Ostman and earns lucrative sums playing for fans who fell in love with his music in the late 1980s. Later this year, he is touring the country with The 80s Invasion Tour, featuring Five Star and Martika
Fed up of the rising price of petrol? Try these tricks and save £231 a year - just by driving more efficiently
The price of fuel has risen by nearly 10p a litre in the past three months, but motorists can save an average of £231 a year - simply by driving more efficiently. Sometimes referred to as 'ecodriving' or 'hypermiling', the idea is that by making small adjustments to your behaviour you need fill your tank less often, also reducing pollution. Here's how to do it
Give your portfolio a fitness boost and some added muscle...without all the legwork
As summer approaches, more of us are pulling on our trainers, getting on our bikes or heading to the park or gym. But should investors follow the trend and put their money into the names behind the shoes, cycles and skin tight leggings and tops? Investment experts suggest that, if chosen wisely, an investment in certain sports-related firms can add muscle to a portfolio.
Smart meter rollout still a 'million miles away' from its 2020 target, with figures showing steady drop off of installations
There was a 6.7% decrease in domestic smart meter installations in the first three months of 2019, with roughly a million installed by large suppliers, according to new data. In a rush to meet the deadline, all of the Big Six suppliers now only offer their cheapest tariffs to those who have - or are willing to have - a smart meter fitted.
Green machine: Ferrari's 211mph SF90 Stradale is its first ever PLUG-IN HYBRID supercar that will cost around £400k and go 15 miles using only electric power
The Italian firm says its new 211mph SF90 Stradale is 'the most powerful Ferrari ever' developing a total of 1,000 horsepower that helps it accelerate from rest to 62mph in just 2.5 seconds. And it can travel up to 15.5 miles (25km) in zero-emissions electric power only - allowing it to enter cities which ban use of conventional petrol engines.
Will this life cover deal leave you Dead Happy...or is it full of more holes than Swiss cheese?
If you were to rate it for the creativity and brashness of its marketing, you would probably give it ten out of ten. But DeadHappy scores less highly on certainty and comprehensiveness. Experts fear proceeds may not be paid promptly after death and may attract inheritance tax, while buyers are not protected from above inflation premium increases
How much internet speed do you really need? Everything you need to know about fibre broadband - and the best deals now
There is often confusion over which type of broadband is really the fastest and how much speed the average person really needs to power their internet. Standard copper broadband is often no longer sophisticated enough to handle the public's ever increasing data download needs, but are you one of the people who would be better off with fibre broadband and how fast do you need to go?
I was self-employed and paid NI for 50 years - why don't I get a full state pension? Steve Webb replies
Since my retirement in 2015 at the age of 65, I've been somewhat perplexed at having my state pension downgraded by £30 per week due to the fact that in 1987 I took out a self employed pension. Even though I have a record of 50 years of NI contributions yet my pension is still reduced. I feel that over the years I've done the right thing. The Department for Work and Pensions decision irks me very much.
Tesco Bank can't guarantee customers' home loans will be sold to an active lender, as MPs express fears over 'mortgage prisoners'
Some 23,000 customers were left in the lurch last week as Tesco Bank announced it was exploring the sale of its mortgage book after ceasing all new lending. The 27 MPs from a cross-party group sent a letter to Tesco Bank chief executive Gerry Mallon urging the lender to 'repay its customers' trust' by only exploring a sale to an active lender.
Women savers plan to retire on £168k, while men expect to build pots worth a quarter of a million
Women savers are on course to end up with pension pots two thirds the size of men's, research by Brewin Dolphin reveals. Lower pay and career breaks to care for family are still holding back women's ability to save for old age - but younger generations are better off than those currently reaching retirement.
Want a piece of one-off financial advice? Here's what should you ask for and expect to get... and how much it might cost
Many people could benefit from one-time help over some aspect of their finances, and this need not tie you into a long-term relationship with an adviser. Paying ongoing fees is not compulsory, and unless you are getting a substantial level of ongoing help in exchange each year, might not be value for money. It's perfectly acceptable to ask an adviser for expert assistance on a particular financial concern, agree between you it will be a single transaction, pay up, and walk away.

One lucky contributor even managed to snap up £2,780 on a sale - not bad for a single iPhone snapshot.

The great business rates fiasco: How 69,000 appeals against 'unfair' tax bills are STILL outstanding after nearly a decade
Thousands of British businesses, including Boots and John Lewis, are locked in a battle to claw back millions of pounds in 'unfair' business rates. Companies can appeal to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), which sets rates, if they believe that their bill is too high. But in a damning indictment of the system, a crippling backlog means 69,000 appeals against rates set as far back as 2010 are still yet to be resolved.

How to invest like Warren Buffett: From picking shares, to fund managers who follow his lead... learn the art of Buffettology!
There is probably no more successful investor living on planet earth today than Warren Buffett. Although now aged 88, he very much remains a cult figure among investors - not just in the United States but worldwide - as a result of his wonderful eye for picking long-term investment winners. An eye that has remained focused for nigh on half a century. Razor sharp. Eagle like. Earlier this month, some 40,000 shareholders flocked to the annual general meeting of Berkshire Hathaway, the company he has run since 1970 and through which he makes his astute investments.
TONY HETHERINGTON: How can this firm of muggers at Global Spread Exchange even sleep at night?
I was contacted by a 'David Green' and was persuaded to invest £500, having been told that his company is approved by the Financial Conduct Authority. Later, a 'Blake Crawford' rang to say he had made £245 profit for me and urged me to invest a further £1,000. I told him I would not add to the £500, though other people have since called from the company with the same request. Now I find I cannot contact them.

Savers misled by wrong state pension forecasts that left their plans 'in tatters' - but the Government only admits to 'occasional' errors
A This is Money investigation has revealed a string of incorrect forecasts sent to people now facing a poorer retirement than they expected. These cases point to a systematic failure, with potentially many more savers affected who haven't realised yet. Sandra Irving, pictured left, has been told her record puts her state pension at around £22 a week less than the original figure she was given - a possible shortfall of nearly £23,000 over a typical 20-year retirement.Colin Murray, top right, and Vivienne Young, bottom right with husband Phil, are also affected.
Revealed: How 33m dirty Dieselgate cars in Europe have NOT been fixed and are still producing illegal levels of harmful emissions
At the current rate of recalls, all cars will not be fixed until 2021 - some six years after the scandal hit headlines and the Volkswagen Group first initiated call backs for impacted models. Central and Eastern Europe is particularly lagging behind with updates specifically to affected VW Group models, while a quarter of UK cars have still not been repaired, the data shows.

On this week's podcast, we dive into what is currently a weird world of mortgages: where a greater supply of money to lend than demand to borrow means there are some very cheap deals on offer.

How much do I need to save for my pension? A quick guide to retirement saving...
The amount you can save into a pension ultimately depends on what you can afford - but the longer you leave it the more you will need to save. We tend to put ambitious targets on our hoped-for income in retirement and then underestimate how much we will need to set aside to achieve that. So how much should you save?
What next for interest rates? Bank tipped to hold for most of 2019, as inflation stays low and Brexit is extended
Lower than expected inflation figures have added weight to expectations that interest rate rises will remain on hold throughout most of 2019. This combined with the Brexit extension is forecast to keep monetary policy steady, with rates held at 0.75 per cent. While unemployment is low and wages are rising, there are still concerns over Britain's consumer economy and business investment being stalled by continuing Brexit uncertainty.
What next for mortgage rates? Rates low as lenders chase business
The average two-year fixed rate mortgage rate has crept up by 0.13 per cent in the past month, possibly showing the first signs that the ongoing price war between lenders is drawing to a close.
