Donald Trump bids fond farewell to the Queen at the end of his state visit to Britain

Mr Trump and his wife Melania, who are travelling to Ireland this afternoon before going to France tomorrow, joined the monarch and Prince Charles to speak to some of the 300 Second World War veterans who fought on the Normandy beaches 75 years ago. As they posed for the final photograph at the D-Day 75 commemoration event in Portsmouth, the President told the Queen: 'It was a great honour to be with you' and Her Majesty replied: 'I hope you come to this country again soon'. Mr Trump was heard saying: 'Great woman. Great, great woman' as he and Melania went to board his Marine One helicopter. They flew to Southampton Airport where Air Force One was waiting to fly them to Shannon in Ireland. The Queen, Mr Trump and Prince Charles had just met with six veterans who fought on D-Day following the grand commemoration ceremony in Portsmouth today. At a small lunch reception also attended by the First Lady Melania and world leaders including Theresa May and Emmanuel Macron, the President told the veterans of his honour to meet them and he had been moved by their stories. Hours earlier the Queen paid tribute to 'my generation' after a British veteran received an ovation from the monarch and Donald Trump who described his 'mates that didn't come back'.

Trump joins the Queen to honour D-Day veterans in Portsmouth

The Queen today paid tribute to 'my generation' as she saluted the heroism of D-Day veterans at a 75th anniversary event where a British veteran received an ovation from the monarch and Donald Trump. More than 300 heroes who survived the invasion of France in 1944 were guests of honour. Theresa May, Emmanuel Macron, Angela Merkel and Justin Trudeau were among the politicians who gathered in Portsmouth exactly 75 years after US General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, gave the final order to invade German-occupied France with the message: 'The eyes of the world are upon you'. Sergeant John Jenkins MBE, 99, who was born and raised in the Hampshire city, was in the Pioneer Corps on D-Day and aged 23 (inset) landed on Gold Beach on June 8, and gave a moving, humble and funny speech that brought world leaders and royalty to their feet. He said: 'I was terrified, I think everyone was. I was just a small part in a very big machine. You never forget your comrades because we were all in it together'.

JLS' Oritsé Williams' mansion burns to the ground after rape trial

JLS star Oritsé Williams's £3million mansion has been gutted by fire in a suspected arson just days after he was cleared of raping a fan in a hotel room. Around 70 firefighters were called to tackle the huge blaze, which broke out yesterday afternoon (below left and right), but they could do nothing to prevent the three-storey property's roof being destroyed (pictured above this morning). Police revealed today they are now treating the fire as suspicious and an investigation has been launched into the cause. Williams bought the six-bedroom home for £3million with his then-girlfriend AJ Azari in 2013. Five years later he put it on the market at a knock-down price of £1.75million after he was charged with rape, but it is yet to sell. The lavish property, in Croydon, south London, was once owned by legendary late comedian Ronnie Corbett but fell into a state of disrepair after it was sold to 32-year-old Williams. It features a hot tub in the bedroom, outdoor swimming pool and a ping pong table. Last week, the singer (pictured inset right) was found not guilty of rape.

Colourised images show Allied troops storming the beaches of Normandy 75 years ago

American medics treat a wounded man on the beaches on June 6, 1944 (top left), Rangers rest in a German defensive position at Pointe du Hoc they captured during the invasion (bottom), and reinforcements come ashore after the initial fighting (top right) in these fascinating images that have been rendered in colour for the first time. D-Day saw tens of thousands of Allied troops storm the beaches of Normandy and drop from the skies in an attempt to break into Hitler's 'fortress Europe'. Despite failing to achieve a single key objective on the first day of fighting, they gained a toe-hold on the European mainland which they used to drive the Nazis back to Berlin, where they were crushed by the Russians.

300 D-Day veterans gather in Portsmouth 75 years later

Reg Charles, 96, is the last surviving member of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry which helped to secure two key bridges in Normandy, just hours before the Allied beach assault on June 6, 1944. Some 18 men died in the raid (right) codenamed Operation Deadstick, which aimed to land six Horsa gliders near two small bridges over the River Orne and Caen Canal in northern France, capturing them from the Germans. Mr Charles, who lives in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, arrived a few days after the glider invasion itself, but is the last surviving member of the unit. Today, he proudly saluted during a ceremony at the Pegasus Bridge Museum (left). Other veterans today spoke of their pride at attending the D-Day 75th anniversary event in Portsmouth along with world leaders, describing it as an emotional chance to remember their comrades who did not return.

They were honouring the airborne soldiers who jumped into gunfire and death ahead of the June 6, 1944, seaborne invasion. Their engines throbbing, the C-47 transporters dropped group after group of parachutists. Mr Rice jumped in a tandem into roughly the same area he landed in on D-Day near Carentan, a town among the main targets for the paratroopers. He said: 'It went perfect, perfect jump. I feel great. I'd go up and do it all again.' They jumped from the C-47s in Second World War colours and other aircraft, aiming for fields of wild flowers on the edge of the town.
