Felipe, then Crown Prince and heir to the throne, married former journalist Letizia Ortiz in a lavish ceremony at Madrid's Almudena Cathedral in May 2004.

Felipe and Letizia's engagement announcement in November 2003 came as a surprise to many.

During her journalism career she reported on international news events including reporting from New York in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
