Ruby Rose fulfilled her 'childhood dream' earlier this year by landing a groundbreaking role as the first openly-lesbian Batwoman.

And on Wednesday, the gender fluid star revealed she was shocked to receive backlash for saying she identifies as lesbian woman.

'I didn’t know I couldn’t be a lesbian because I’m not a woman', the 33-year old Australian beauty told EW.

In the interview, the former Orange Is The New Black star spoke candidly about her gender identity and how it's not always easy 'to keep up with the terminology'. 

Despite the controversy, The CW series has been a success with a full season being picked up by the network after the brunette beauty impressed in it's pilot. 

Confirming the news via Instagram, she shared a 20-second teaser and captioned the video:  'A new hero emerges. @cwbatwoman is coming soon to The CW!'.

Ruby's character is described as having, 'a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind,' with Kane also said to be, 'an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence.' 

After being cast in August, Rose took to Instagram to deliver a heartfelt message to her fans and supporters.

'The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored. I'm also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream,' she began.

'This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on TV and felt alone and different,' she added. 'Thank you everyone. Thank you god.'

Ruby also spoke to TV Week at the time about how important the casting was to her and the LGBTQ community, saying  'I know a win for anyone in our community is a win for all.'

Elseworlds: Batwoman will most likely screen in Australia on Foxtel later in the year.
