She gushed: 'I had no idea how much Tales would mean to me, and for me it changed my life in many ways.'

Talking about her character in the new series, she said Mary Anne will 'meet all the new young people' who have taken up residence in Mrs Madrigal's (Olympia Dukakis) lodging, who the original characters 'can pass the baton to.'

The series will feature an array of new queer characters, including Ellen Page playing Mary Anne's sexually fluid adopted daughter Shawna.

Based on the Armistead Maupin novels of the same name, the original mini-series aired on Channel 4 in the UK in September 1993 and on PBS in January 1994, before returning for a sequel in 1998 and a third instalment in 2001.

Laura confessed she was 'stunned' when the show was dropped, and she was 'quite surprised by how negatively the LGBTQ community was seen at the time', but added that 'the world has changed a lot now' so it's great to return to the show.

She explained: 'The world has changed, it’s in a very complicated, confusing perplexing time, and I think many people are afraid and lonely, and fear is very easily manipulated and used.

'So, something like this is hopefully a salve and a joy to watch and be a part of and a celebration of people and our joys and our complexities, and the joy of being alive on the planet.'

The new series has Orange Is The New Black's Lauren Morelli as showrunner, and Laura added that 'all our writers are LGBTQ' so they can 'support' the community.

In the Netflix series, Mary Ann returns to San Francisco, 20 years after leaving to start her career and reunites with her daughter and ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross).

During the pre-recorded interview, Laura revealed she was set to film the third season of Ozark this week and heaped praise on her co-star Jason Bateman who she said does 'a remarkable job' as actor and director.

Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City is set to air on Netflix on June 7, 2019.
