He's the heartthrob whose played brawny superheros and villains in hit shows such as Arrow and Teen Wolf.

But for US actor Colton Haynes, being openly gay in Hollywood hasn't always been so easy.

Appearing on Channel 10's The Project on Friday night, the 30-year-old actor said that while things have certainly changed for the LGBT community, there is still a long way to go.

'Luckily it hasn't been too difficult for me, but it still is very difficult,' he said.

'I mean, there's still a long way to go with that because people have a hard time separating your personal life with what they see on television.'

'All the roles I've played have been really primarily straight and kind of like an alpha-male. For some reason people aren't ready to see people who are gay or a part of the LGBT community ... which is very weird,' he added.

But Colton remained optimistic, saying: 'It's got a long way to go but it's finally happening for us - so I'm excited about it.'

Colton is married to florist Jeff Leatham, 47, yet the relationship remains rocky.

The pair have been on-and-off ever since Colton filed for divorce in May 2018, with Jeff most recently re-filing in December last year.

And with Colton potentially being single soon, the actor says a relocation to Australia may be on the cards.

'It's my favourite place, my favourite people,' he revealed on The Project.

He continued: 'I'm always here for such a short amount of time, but I was here for a month when I was here for the movie [2105's San Andreas] and I wanted to stay and I want to move here.

'So if anyone is looking or has an extra room to rent or something... I'm dead serious,' he added.
