The last Australian to win a French Open singles title was Margaret Court in 1973. Barty's win is her first singles Grand Slam title, after winning the doubles at the US Open last year. 'I'm a little bit speechless, it's incredible, I've played the perfect match today,' a delighted Barty said from the court moments after victory. 'I'm so proud of myself and my team, it has been a crazy two weeks.' Barty stood proudly during Advanced Australia Fair and was snapped smiling as she clung onto her trophy (left). During the awards ceremony, Barty said: 'This is incredible, it's been the most amazing journey we have been on in the last three years and I feel like this is just the start for us.”

In The Last Pirate of New York : A Ghost Ship, a Killer, and the Birth of a Gangster Nation, author Rich Cohen reveals the shocking, true story of Hicks (right), who was convicted of piracy and became the last person to be publicly hanged in New York in July 1860 at about age 40 on what was then called Bedloe's Island (left) and what is now home to the Statue of Liberty. In an excerpt of the book, reprinted in Tablet, Cohen called Hicks, a married father of one, 'the most feared man in the infamous New York slums,' who 'operated so long ago he was not even called a gangster - he was called a pirate.' Back in the pre-Civil War days, Cohen wrote that police considered a pirate to be 'any criminal who made his living on the water, attacking and robbing ships beyond the jurisdiction of the landlocked coppers.'

Venezuelan former oil workers enter their second week of hunger strike

Forty ex-oil workers took to the Plaza de la Moneda square, adjacent to Venezuela's central bank, in Caracas eight days ago in a bid to claim what they say are unpaid wages. In 2007, 8,500 direct or indirect workers of American oil company Exxonmobil were sacked after late president Hugo Chavez nationalised a project in the country's Orinoco Oil Belt. Despite being promised severance packages and social security contributions, the workers claim they never saw a dime. The workers used to be a part of one of the most productive and lucrative oil exporting industries in the world, propping up the countries economy for decades.
