Trump says New York Times and CNN will do ANYTHING to 'see our country fail' including publishing false reports about the U.S. negotiations with Mexico

  • President Donald Trump re-upped attacks on CNN and The New York Times for being the 'enemy of the people'
  • He said the outlets would publish fake news stories just to see 'our country fail'
  • Trump made these comments after a report claimed from the Times claimed the deal he made with Mexico this week was already reached months ago
  •  The president also said that there would be a 'National Holiday' declared if former President Barack Obama made the same deal with Mexico
  • In a joint statement Mexico said it agreed to deploy 'its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border'
  • The talks with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador came after Trump threatened tariffs if Mexico did not help stop Central American migrants

President Donald Trump went on attack Sunday morning, claiming that the 'failing' New York Times and 'ratings challenged' CNN wants to see the U.S. fail.

His reupped attacks on the media outlets, which he calls the 'enemy of the people,' come after the Times reported on Saturday that Trump had already reached the same deal he touted this week months ago.

'Another false report in the Failing @nytimes,' Trump said of the report in a thread of tweets a day after the report was published. 'We have been trying to get some of these Border Actions for a long time, as have other administrations, but were not able to get them, or get them in full, until our signed agreement with Mexico.'

'The Failing @nytimes, & ratings challenged @CNN, will do anything possible to see our Country fail! They are truly The Enemy of the People!' Trump said.

Trump said that if his predecessor, Barack Obama, made the deal he made with Mexico, the media would declare a 'National Holiday' in his honor.

In a four-tweet thread, Trump made his attacks on the media after the Times reported on Saturday that the deal Trump touted he struck with Mexican this week was actually a few months old

'If President Obama made the deals that I have made, both at the Border and for the Economy, the Corrupt Media would be hailing them as Incredible, & a National Holiday would be immediately declared,' he tweeted separating from his original thread.

'With me, despite our record setting Economy and all that I have done, no credit!' he lamented.

Earlier this month, Trump threatened imposing a 5 per cent tariff on Mexican imports if the country did not agree to help stop the inflow of Central American migrants headed to the U.S. southern border.

He also said he would continue to impose 5 extra per cent each month nothing was done until October, when it would cap at 25 per cent tariffs on Mexican goods.

Trump and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador issued a joint declaration on Friday after meeting that said Mexico agreed to deploy 'its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border.'

The Times, however, said that sources noted this pledge was made in March during talks between then-Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Mexican Secretary of the Interior Olga Sanchez.

Trump went against this report in his Twitter tirade.

'Additionally, and for many years, Mexico was not being cooperative on the Border in things we had, or didn't have, and now I have full confidence, especially after speaking to their President yesterday, that they will be very cooperative and want to get the job properly done,' he continued in the thread.

He also previewed that he discussed other issues with Lopez Obrador this week that were not announced in the press release and they would be shared when appropriate.

The president also did not dismiss the idea of possibly imposing tariffs in the future, but said he doesn't think it will be needed.

'Importantly, some things not mentioned in yesterday press release, one in particular, were agreed upon. That will be announced at the appropriate time,' he wrote.

'There is now going to be great cooperation between Mexico & the USA, something that didn't exist for decades. However, if for some unknown reason there is not, we can always go back to our previous, very profitable, position of Tariffs - But I don't believe that will be necessary.'
