Boris Johnson unveils Tory bid warning party will die unless Brexit happens

Boris Johnson finally broke cover to launch his Tory leadership bid today - but was left blustering as he was grilled over cocaine use. At an event in Westminster packed with his MP backers - and his girlfriend Carrie Symonds - the former foreign secretary gave an impassioned account of why he should be the next PM. He warned that politicians must 'rise to the challenge' of delivering Brexit by the end of October or face 'mortal retribution' from voters who are 'in despair' at the impasse. Mr Johnson cautioned that the Tories will 'kick the bucket' and open the door for Jeremy Corbyn to sneak into power unless they counter the threat from Nigel Farage by following through on the 2016 referendum result. But Mr Johnson also faced pointed questions from journalists over whether he was gaffe-prone and lacked the discipline to be a good PM. He flannelled desperately when asked by the Daily Mail's Jason Groves whether he had taken cocaine in the past - something that has threatened to destroy Michael Gove's campaign. Confronted with his 2007 comments in an interview with GQ Magazine - when he said he 'tried it at university' and 'remembered it vividly' - Mr Johnson merely said: 'I think the canonical account of this event when I was 19 has appeared many, many times. 'I think what most people in this country want us to focus on is what we can do for them and this great country.' Piers Morgan, who conducted the interview for GQ, immediately responded on social media that Mr Johnson had 'unequivocally' admitted taking cocaine during their conversation.

Ex-nurse jailed after posing as a man to con women into sending naked photos faces prison

Adele Rennie (pictured, main) from Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, conned her victims during an 18-day period just three months after getting out of prison for an identical scam directed at other women. This time she posed as men named Dan, Daniel, Max and Jack in order to obtain naked pictures from them. One 27-year-old victim described how she felt in 'danger' while speaking to the stalker as she claimed to be a criminal lawyer. She called her friend, telling her: 'You need to come and get me. I don't feel safe in my house.' It comes after Rennie pleaded guilty to 18 offences against 10 women in 2017, when she posed as a doctor (inset, the picture she used in the first scam) so that she could have sexually charged conversations with the victims.

The victim was knifed at Newham University Hospital (pictured) in Plaistow, east London, this morning in what the NHS trust described as a 'shocking and senseless' attack.

Fascinating seaside photos reveal the changing beach habits of Britons over past 150

Stunning images of forgotten holidays to Whitstable, Victorian era trips to Blackpool and festivals on the Isle of Wight displayed in Margate chronicle the rise and fall of Britain's coasts. The coastal holiday was first popularised by the Victorians (bottom right - 1850), who headed to the coast in their droves on Britain's rail network for the perfect summer holiday. British families kept visiting the coastline as the ideal summer getaway (left - family munching ice lollies on Whitstable beach, Kent, in 1959, and top right - family enjoying a Skegness day out in 1974) until the advent of cheap air travel. When the first all-inclusive package holiday flight took off from Manchester's Ringway airport for Spain's Palma de Mallorca on 5 May 1962 it signalled a major change in the British tourism market. Families do still visit the coast for summer (bottom right - Smiling family on Hastings' beach in 2005) but not in the numbers they once did.

The officers threw pyrotechnics and used Pava spray to distract the 6ft 2in convict as they attempted to bring him under control during a shocking eight-hour riot. The mayhem involved John Onyenaychi, 38, a knifeman who tried to kill two police officers in Ealing, West London, while on licence from prison in December 2010. Onyenaychi, whom police once described as one of Britain's most dangerous men, caused £15,000 of damage at the top-security HMP Full Sutton in East Yorkshire. Behind the closed-doors of their £1million 'love-nest' flat in south London, Carrie is said to call him her 'Bozzie Bear' - after Fozzie, the fluffy-haired Muppet. The former foreign secretary calls her 'Otter' - who are cuddly but have the thickest fur of all animals - a nod to his tough partner who rose to the top of the Tory party's PR machine by the age of 30. Her success also came after the ordeal of being one of the youngest victims of taxi driver rapist John Worboys when she was just 19. And now she is just weeks away from becoming entering No 10 as Mr Johnson's girlfriend.

Today, McVey (left) was asked by LBC presenter Iain Dale: 'What on earth did you do to Lorraine Kelly?' McVey replied: 'I don't know. I had a very fun time at GMTV.' Shocking moment Hong Kong riot police beat up unarmed protester as violent clashes force the city to delay debating Chinese extradition law

Police in Hong Kong today fired pepper spray, used batons and water cannons to beat back umbrella-wielding protesters who tried to reach the city's parliament as demonstrations against a controversial extradition bill turned violent. Clashes broke out shortly after 3pm (0700 GMT) - the deadline protesters had given for the government to abandon a controversial bill that would allow criminal suspects in Hong Kong to be sent for trial in mainland China. Police armed with riot shields, tear gas and batons have pushed back against protesters attempting to storm past barricades to get into the city's government headquarters. Earlier in the day, tens of thousands of black-clad demonstrators paralysed central Hong Kong, filling nearby streets and overturning barriers outside government offices where the bill was due for a scheduled debate. By late morning, with crowds swelling, officials in the Legislative Council said they would delay the second reading of the bill 'to a later date'. The fresh rally comes three days after more than a million people marched through the streets of Hong Kong to voice their objections to the proposed law.

At the time, his mother Katie Bowker (right, on Monday; and, left, with husband Steven and son Harvey), 39, was a midwife at Royal Oldham Hospital, which is also part of Pennine Acute NHS Hospitals Trust, and two colleagues had taken charge of Dexter's delivery. But an inquest at Manchester Coroner's Court found medics had failed to pick up a slowing in Dexter's foetal growth towards the end of the pregnancy. A community midwife who saw her at 26 weeks and at 38 weeks admitted she should have been sent for further scans. It also emerged that the midwife who helped her in labour was due to have refresher courses on aspects of midwife care including neo-natal resuscitation.

Life on the edge: Author JULIET BLAXLAND's home is facing an imminent collapse into the sea, but in this heartfelt elegy, she reveals she is savouring every last moment on the wild stretch of Suffolk coast

In this heartfelt elegy, Juliet Blaxland reveals how she is savouring every last moment in her coastal Suffolk home, which rests on top of a collapsing cliff top. To live here is to feel closer to something that the modern world has almost lost, she writes. The cliff is a wild place, bashed by raw nature, the landscape around it one of ever-changing readjustments. Where once there was a sand dune, now there is flat beach. Where once the reed bed met the beach, now there is a sandy bay from the night when the sea took the land. Where once there was a tree, with its bleached-out branches standing up in the sea, now there is no sign of it since it was washed away. Where once we walked a hundred paces to the edge of the cliff, we are the ones now on the edge.

Photographs show the Army's Long Range Desert Group in action in North Africa during WWII

The Long Range Desert Group (LRDG), established in June 1940, was a highly successful and well-organised group of specialist soldiers who caused chaos for Britain's enemies in North Africa during the Second World War. The unit undertook many covert tasks such as reconnaissance patrols and intelligence missions from behind Italian lines, and used their knowledge of the desert to guide other forces such as the SAS on their own sorties. Striking images show one soldier manning a Vickers machine gun while hanging off the side of a heavily modified Ford truck (bottom left), as another depicts soldiers donning goggles against a sandstorm (top left). Other remarkable snaps capture the harsh and unforgiving conditions under which the elite soldiers operated, with intelligent-looking men seeking shade from the desert sun under the wing of an airplane (top right).
