Special case? Manchester United's Paul Pogba needs to be special to merit that

MARTIN SAMUEL - CHIEF SPORTS WRITER: Paul Pogba is looking for a new challenge. No, he won't try to justify the £89million Manchester United spent on him three years ago. He wants a challenge, not mission impossible. Pogba's challenge echoes that of many players, not least Romelu Lukaku. It is the challenge of screwing more money out of another elite club, the challenge of racking up higher wages and a sizeable signing-on fee, the challenge of a lighter workload in an easier league. He doesn't fancy trying to restore Manchester United to the pinnacle of English football next season, or even the top four. He's not up for balancing Thursday night fixtures in Europe with domestic consistency, or helping shape a new team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (centre right), maybe even as captain.

Manchester United prepare to offer unsettled Paul Pogba £500,000 a week to keep him at Old

Manchester United are prepared to offer Paul Pogba (top) a new mega-money contract in a bid to persuade their unsettled star to stay. United chief Ed Woodward (bottom) is adamant a player who is as central to the club's commercial interests as he is on the pitch will not be sold after blocking Pogba's desired move to Barcelona last year.

According to Globe Sports, Barcelona have held talks with high-ranking officials at PSG and are confident of striking a deal for Neymar to return this summer.

Gianfranco Zola is expected to be among the casualties as he reaches the end of a one-year deal and Carlo Cudicini may return to his ambassadorial role at Chelsea.

Palace are digging their heels in after rejecting United's opening attempt to prise away their talented right back. The south Londoners snubbed United's first offer of £35m plus £15m in bonuses.

The striker's immediate future at Old Trafford is one of uncertainty with United understood to be open to selling him. Inter Milan have expressed an interest but United want to recoup £75m on him.

Barcelona playing catch-up in transfer window while Real Madrid seem to unveil signings

PETE JENSON IN SPAIN: As Real Madrid seem to unveil a new signing every day, everything at Barcelona appears to be on hold, and there are two major reasons why that is the case. The first is that Real Madrid (who unveiled Eden Hazard, right, last week) finished the season trophyless and 19 points off the pace in La Liga - their need was far greater than Barcelona's hence the almost daily good news event. On Monday it was the news that the 18-year-old Brazilian Rodrygo Goes will be presented on Tuesday. The second reason for Barcelona's relative inactivity is that the player whose signing they most want to announce (Antoine Griezmann, left) cannot be revealed until July 1. Elsewhere, the Matthijs de Ligt (centre) situation also remains in suspended animation.

The south London side revealed in a statement on Monday that they were locked in discussions with Bowyer over giving him a new deal but have now admitted that they cannot afford to keep him.

England captain Eoin Morgan did admit a return for the disgraced Hales, who was dropped from the squad after failing a second test for recreational drugs, risked creating a stigma.

Jason Roy is such a special talent that England must do whatever they can to give him as long as possible to recover and still play a part in this World Cup.

Terry has been on the coaching staff at Aston Villa since October, learning the trade and helping Dean Smith's team beat the Rams to clinch promotion in the play-off final at Wembley.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to sure up his defence following a thoroughly disappointing campaign and a £45m plus a player bid has been discussed.

Manchester United are reportedly willing to use young Brazilian midfielder Andreas Pereira as a makeweight in a deal for Leicester City defender Harry Maguire.

RB Leipzig new boy Wolf suffers horrific leg break after scoring in Austria U21s' 2-0 win over Serbia at European Championships

RB Leipzig signing Hannes Wolf suffered a horrendous leg injury while playing for Austria against Serbia in the Under-21 European Championships on Monday evening. The forward, who started the match on the left wing but is adept across the frontline, is scheduled to complete move from Red Bull Salzburg to Leipzig on July 1, after the two clubs agreed a deal back in January. But he will have to wait a long time for his Bundesliga debut after suffering a shattering leg break in the second half against Serbia. Wolf had given his side the lead in the first half with a tap-in, but his participation in the match was cruelly brought to an end after a tackle by Vukasin Jovanovic with 15 minutes to go.

Two people are SHOT at the Raptors NBA victory parade sending swathes of the two million fans who packed Toronto streets fleeing in terror before police take two suspects into custody

Two people were shot following Monday's victory parade in Toronto, celebrating the Raptors' first NBA title. As police told the Daily Mail, both victims sustained serious, but not life-threatening injuries. Two suspects have been arrested and two firearms were recovered, according to police. Police have not announced any of the circumstances surrounding the incident. The day had been peaceful, with as many as two million spectators packing the streets of Toronto to celebrate the Raptors' six-game NBA Finals win over the Golden State Warriors. The festivities began at 10am and ended with a rally at Nathan Phillips Square at 12:30. However, it was there that the shots were fired, prompting thousands of fans to flee the scene. The crowd, estimated to be up to two million by Mike Bartlett, head of community affairs and events with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, is remarkable considering that Toronto has a population of 2.93 million, although the greater-Toronto area population is closer to 6 million. The procession began with Raptors guard Kyle Lowry holding the Larry O'Brien trophy atop one of five double-decker buses while Kawhi Leonard enjoyed a cigar with his NBA Finals MVP trophy in the back of another. Naturally, Toronto native and Raptors 'global ambassador' Drake was along for the ride, and was seen partying with Leonard and his mother. Perhaps more surprisingly, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau even joined the parade, albeit briefly.

Forget the long ball... This new England ditched that and pinched the Pep Guardiola

IAN HERBERT IN NICE: There would have been a significant conversation between Toni Duggan and Pep Guardiola if she had only summoned the courage to approach him. 'I just kind of wanted to sit down with him and talk football,' she says of her time at Manchester City. 'But I thought I'd never get away from him. You see him from a distance and he's chewing someone's ear off about football, and you just think, "Wow - I'd love to ask one question but I'd probably be there for a week".' So the nearest she got to discussing the passing game she has become even better acquainted with since moving to Barcelona two years ago was a slightly uncomfortable moment while training in the indoor dome at City's Etihad Campus.

Solskjaer has to decide if he WANTS to keep 'look-at-me' Paul Pogba

Manchester United have been here before. The buzzword of Sir Alex Ferguson's autobiography was 'control' but there were occasions that even the authority of that totalitarian figure was tested to its very limits. High-profile cases came during Roy Keane's pursuit of a new contract at the turn of the millennium, Cristiano Ronaldo's highly-charged desire to join Real Madrid in the summer of 2006 and then, most acutely, Wayne Rooney's public attempts to force a way out of Old Trafford in 2010.  On each occasion, Ferguson allowed his players to secure victories. Keane's terms improved, Ronaldo had mediation with Rooney after wink-gate at the 2006 World Cup and Rooney signed an extortionate new contract at United despite publicly questioning the club's ambition.

Paul Pogba sensationally admitted he could leave Manchester United amid interest from Real Madrid but the Frenchman's departure could leave a massive void at Old Trafford.

The 31-year-old's current contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the month but Mata now could stay at the club following lengthy discussions over a new deal, according to The Mirror.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Barcelona duo are thought to be suitable replacements for the Frenchman, who has been linked with big-money move to either Real Madrid or Juventus.

Matt Judge is the Man United 's de facto chief negotiator and Ed Woodward's right-hand man

CHRIS WHEELER: Ed Woodward has become an increasingly high-profile character in the six years since, as you would expect from the figurehead of one of the world's biggest football clubs who has overseen a raft of big-name signings. On the other hand, very little is known about the right-hand man who has advised Woodward on those deals and been responsible for negotiating the majority of them since 2016. Search for Matt Judge (right) on the internet and just one - unconfirmed - photograph exists of a tall, balding man walking behind Woodward in club suit and tie. There is no picture on his LinkedIn page.

PETE JENSON IN SPAIN: Real Madrid travel to Canada on July 8 and Zidane wants the midfielder linking up with other new boys Rodrygo, Militao, Jovic, Hazard and Mendy.

FAN VIEW: On the surface, the thoughts of a Man Utd fan will be very straightforward. If any player doesn't want to play for the club, then sell him. It doesn't matter how good that player is.

How technology will change the way we watch sport in modern stadiums

Stadiums, such as Tottenham's new £1bn ground (left), are no longer just a place to come and enjoy a sporting spectacle. Fans want more from the experience than to just take their seats and sit through 90 minutes, 12 rounds or 50 overs. They now demand more than the bells and whistles and, as technology evolves and improves for those watching from their living rooms, stadiums are battling to keep pace and get people through the turnstiles. In a bid to grasp how teams and stadium owners are embracing sweeping technological advances, including VR (inset), Sportsmail spoke to three organisations about three vital aspects of modern stadiums to see how the future match-day experience will look.

Francesco Totti RESIGNS from role at Roma, ending a 30-year relationship with the club

Francesco Totti says that leaving Roma 'is like dying' as the club's legendary former captain announced he is leaving his role as technical director. The 42-year-old addressed the media this afternoon (centre) where he explained why he had decided to bring to an end his 30-year relationship with the club. Totti said it was a day he 'hoped never would have come' but in the end he made the decision having become marginalised behind the scenes by president James Pallotta (inset). He claimed senior management at Roma forced him to retire two years ago and he was ‘excluded from every decision’ in his role as a director at the club since. Totti first joined Roma in 1989 – at 13 – and rose through the ranks to become captain and a club icon.

Bangladesh pull off second-highest run chase in World Cup history to see off the West

ADAM SHERGOLD AT TAUNTON: It wasn't merely the fact Bangladesh completed the second-highest run chase in World Cup history but the yawning ease with which they did it. Of course, nothing seems impossible in cricket any more but there was something truly jaw-dropping in the way Bangladesh, inspired by the magnificent Shakib Al Hasan, chased down 322 with 8.3 overs to spare to pulverise the West Indies' semi-final ambitions. This World Cup had lacked a thrilling run chase but this half-way house fixture in the group stage - one billed as a must-win for both sides - compensated for that. And then some.
