They go high! Barack Obama and his daughter Malia make the most of the sunshine while enjoying hike in the Provence mountains - but Michelle and Sasha seem to have skipped the trek

  • Barack, 57, and Malia, 20, hiked the mountain terrain near Gordes, a commune in France's Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region
  • The former president's wife Michelle, 55, and youngest daughter Sasha, 18, didn't appear to be with them on the group outing
  • It looked like the father and daughter were joined by friends as well as plainclothes Secret Service agents during the hike
  • The excursion came just one day after Michelle and Malia toured a vineyard in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in Provence alongside several friends
  • The Obamas arrived in the south of France on Friday, having traveled to Avignon in a private jet
  • They are understood to be staying at a luxe $60,000-a-week 18th-century farmhouse on Bathelasse Island

Barack Obama braved the heat and enjoyed a hike with his eldest daughter during their family's luxurious vacation in Luberon, France, on Tuesday — but it looks like his wife and youngest child passed on the workout.

The 57-year-old former president and his daughter Malia, 20, joined a group of hikers navigating the rocky mountain terrain near Gordes, a commune in the country's scenic Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. However, Michelle, 55, and Sasha, 18, didn't appear to be with them.

Barack was dressed comfortably in a dark polo shirt and gray shorts, though he made sure to shield his face from the blazing sun with a baseball cap and dark sunglasses.

Malia, meanwhile, wore a white sports bra and black high-waisted shorts for the adventure. Her long braids were pulled up in a ponytail, and she also sported sunglasses.

The father and daughter appeared to be joined by friends as well as plainclothes Secret Service agents who were sporting baseball caps and shorts, just like the former president.

The group was seen walking single file through the terrain, and when they reached the top, they stopped to take in the majestic view — and, of course, snap a few photos.

Barack took out his cellphone at one point and appeared to be photographing a plant or something near it, though he may have been capturing the view from a unique angle.

With only one half of the Obamas embarking on the hike, the family seems to laissez-faire attitude about who goes where and when on their getaway.

Malia's jaunt with her father came just one day after she and her mother toured a beautiful vineyard in the famed Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in Provence alongside several friends.

The former first daughter, who is turning 21 years old on July 4, was seen walking out of Château Vaudieu with her mom, surrounded by friends and several burly Secret Service agents.

It did not look as though Malia's sister Sasha, a recent high school graduate, was with the group during the visit, which took place just a few days after the family arrived in France on a private jet on Friday.

Michelle and her eldest daughter appeared to have enjoyed a tour of the historic building, which was built in the 18th century and sits at the center of 70 hectares of vineyards.

The property, which is one of only three 18th century castles in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, is located just 35 minutes away from the sprawling $60,000-a-week farmhouse where the family is understood to be staying for the duration of their Provence trip.

It seems as though the family has settled into life in France very quickly, with both Michelle and Malia looking happy and relaxed as they made their way down the steps at the front of the château and into waiting vehicles.

Clearly embracing the warm weather in the south of France, Michelle chose a rust-colored midi dress with thin straps for the occasion, accessorizing the chic look with a wide-brimmed sunhat and a pair of dark sunglasses.

Ever the fashionista, she also added a pair of espadrille-style wedges to her look and wore a gold pendant around her neck.

Malia, meanwhile, looked cool and low-key in a pair of black skinny jeans and a strapless white shirt, which she wore with a black crossbody purse.

The mother-and-daughter duo and their friends were surrounded by a team of plain-clothes Secret Service agents as they left the building and headed into a waiting vehicle with tinted windows.

Michelle and Malia appeared to be surrounded by friends, as there was no sign of Barack during the vineyard outing. However, he was with his wife and children when they arrived in France on Friday night.

The foursome traveled to Avignon by private jet, just days after Sasha graduated from high school in front of her proud parents and her older sibling.

Once in France, they were taken to the seven-bedroom Le Mas des Poiriers, a beautiful 18th-century farmhouse that they are renting for the week, according to Le Parisien.

It sits on 65 acres — providing seclusion and privacy for the Obamas during their stay while affording them plenty of room to roam around and soak up the sunshine.

The main house features seven double bedrooms, a family room with large windows that allow for natural light illuminate the lavishly decorated space. It also has a big farmhouse style kitchen with a large family dining table in the center.

Since their arrival in Europe, the family has been enjoying the local sight and sounds, with Malia and Sasha spending a day at a popular local market on Saturday.

The famous L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue market is one of the top tourist attractions in the idyllic Provençal town known as the 'Venice of Provence' thanks to the scenic Sorgue river.

Malia and Sasha stepped out with a few friends to check out the market famous for its wide array of antiques, having apparently left their parents at home for the day.

Both daughters dressed comfortably for their day of sightseeing at the bustling market.

Malia wore a black button-down shirt with white detailing on the color and a pair of black shorts under an oversize black denim jacket.

Sasha, however, opted for a more daring look, donning a white crop-crop top, classic blue jeans, and a green military jacket topped off with a cheetah-print bucket hat.

The girls were accompanied by two pals, as well as a couple of members of their Secret Service detail.

Malia was seen sampling fresh strawberries before purchasing some to bring home to her parents.

On Sunday, which was Father's Day, the family spent plenty of time together, with Sasha and Malia joining their parents for a celebratory dinner at the Michelin-starred La Mirande restaurant in Avignon.

Earlier in the day, Michelle and Barack visited Palais des Papes, the biggest gothic palace in the world, where they enjoyed a tour of the historic site — and took time to snap plenty of pictures of the property and its stunning surrounding scenery.

It's been a big month for the parents, who celebrated their youngest daughter's high school graduation before their trip.

Just one day before her 18th birthday on June 10, Sasha graduated from Sidwell, Washington, D.C.'s most elite private high school that costs $40,000 per year.

She was photographed wearing a white dress for her Class of 2019 photo, while her parents and sister were seen sitting down in the stands at the ceremony and later mingling among the other families in attendance.

Sasha is reportedly set to start at the University of Michigan in the fall.

While Malia is currently enrolled at Harvard University, the teen opted not to follow in in her big sister's footsteps by attending an Ivy League school.

She allegedly turned down a place at Yale in favor of the University of Michigan.

And if the Obamas want to host a special meal to continue to celebrate Sasha's graduation while they are away, their holiday home boasts a large formal dining room that seats up to 18 guests is also contained in the property.

The house comes professionally staffed with two chefs and two waiters, as well as full-time housekeeping. Outdoors, the property boasts a pear orchard that produces six tons of fruit annually.

The former first family could also enjoy a game of tennis or swim laps in the pool, or strolls out on the gardens.

For the past week, rumors had been circulating the Obamas might be staying at the magnificent home of former French Formula 1 driver Jean Alesi, high above Villeneuve, AFP reported.

Avignon was the papal seat of the Catholic Church from 1309 to 1377 and can be seen at the medieval Palais des Papes (Pope's Palace) in the center of Avignon.
